Eleanor Hemingway Obituary
Eleanor W. Age 77, of W. Broad St., Horseheads, and formerly of Beecher St., Elmira, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 3, 2006. Mrs. Hemingway was born in Dundee, NY, Sept. 10, 1928, the daughter of the late George L. and the late Virginia Evelyn Brimmer Smith. She was a Registered LPN, employed by Head Start in Elmira for many years. Mrs. Hemingway was a member for over 50 years of OES Harmony Loyal Chapter #265 where she also held various chairs and offices. Eleanor was a member of the Friday Morning Breakfast Club and a Volunteer for Southern Tier Hospice. Devoted in her faith, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Horseheads, a member of the United Methodist Women, Deborah Hannah Circle, and Red Hat Society, the Happy Hatters. Having been predeceased by her husband, Cecil N. Hemingway on Aug. 23, 1989, she became instrumental in the forming and founding of the Widow and Widowers support group in 1990 of which she is still active today. She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie (Howard) Congdon of Dublin, VA, Sharon (Doug) Stevens of Elmira, NY, and Christine Hemingway of Horseheads, NY; one son, George (Melanie) Hemingway of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Heather (Andy) Smith of Christiansburg, VA, Matthew Congdon of Henrietta, NY, Emily (Joe) Whelehan of Goshen, NY, Benjamin, Samuel, Timothy, and Martha Hemingway at Home, Melissa (Scott) Mattison of New London, CT, Robert (Kelly) Hudson of Waverly, NY, Christine Hudson of Elmira, NY, Jonathan and Erin Evens at home; great-grandchildren, Megan Smith, Kenneth, Justin, and Jennifer Mattison; special friend, Genevieve Biggs of Elmira Heights, NY; and many close and caring friends and neighbors. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. Main St., Horseheads, on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, from 6-8:30 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 1034 W. Broad St., Horseheads, with the Rev. Dr. Robert O. Sherburne officiating. Burial service will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Reading Center, NY. Those wishing may remember Eleanor with memorials in her name to The Living Memorial Endowment Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 1034 W. Broad St., Horseheads, NY 14845. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
