Austin, Warren H.

Warren H. Austin, 95, of Sidney, NY, passed peacefully away, surrounded by his family, on Friday, March 24, 2017. He was born on June 4, 1921 in Campbell, NY to Floyd E. and Ida J. Austin, who predeceased him. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Campbell High School in 1939. He went on to take post graduate courses in 1940. He began working for Ingersol-Rand when he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Theetge. They were married May 8, 1943 in Greenwood, Mississippi. In July 1942, Warren enlisted in the US Army, serving in the Air Corps during World War II as a fighter pilot, flying 84 missions in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in August 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant. He went on to work at Schweitzer Aircraft as a welder and fabricator, working up to Floor Foreman and Glider Pilot and Instructor. In 1955, he was hired by Scintilla as an Executive pilot and mechanic. After retiring, Warren became the airport manager at Sidney Municipal Airport, where he was also a member of the Fagan Flyers, retiring in 2013. Warren and Elizabeth were longtime members of the Unadilla Center United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities, including Finance Chairman and Sunday school teacher. Warren loved everyone, especially his family, friends and the Lord. He will be missed by: son, Robert Austin of Honeoye, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Robert Johnson of Beaufort, NC; 5 grandsons: Jason and Allyson Austin of Walworth, NY; Eric and Lindsay Austin of Richmondville, NY; Robert and Tina Johnson of Boomer, NC; Brett Johnson of Unadilla and David and Miranda Durham Johnson of Corrales, NM; 12 great grandchildren; five siblings: Anna Sherwood, Floyd "JR" Austin, David and Dorothy Austin, Douglas and Mora Austin and William and Josephine Austin and sister-in-law, Ellie Austin, all of Campbell, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Warren was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Austin in 2007; three brothers: Robert, Harold and Walt Austin; and two sisters: Marion Stedge Brown and Laura Warn. A celebration of Warren's life will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838, with his grandson, Pastor Eric Austin officiating. Condolences to all of Warren's family from both of us here.
I had only learned of his passing recently.
We first met about 10 years ago at the airport. With many things in common (power and soaring pilots, USAF veterans, aircraft and auto mechanics, model aircraft, and Wives named Elizabeth) we fast became friends.
When ever my work took me near Sidney I would visit Warren on a Friday each month and we would talk for hours, siting at the kitchen table. The last time I saw Warren was mid November 2016.
He was the most interesting person I have ever met and am proud to have called him my friend.
Upon parting each visit I would always tell him that "I aspire to one day be half the man he still is"

Sincerely
Herb and Elizabeth Spicer

My father, Kenneth Theetge, a nephew to Warren and Liz, always shares his fondest memories of his first glider ride and spoke so proudly of Warren's time spent as a pilot. We are very sorry for your loss and hope your memories help guide you through this difficult time.
"Thank you for your service and may you rest in peace." The Theetge family.

Uncle Warren will be sadly missed by us all. Prayers and hugs coming your way. I remember the days when we used to come visit in Sidney and your dad would take my dad ( Paul) up in the plane. Carol, Bob and family. I understand the sadness of loss, the peace when someone you love is no longer suffering and the need to continue on. I pray for God to comfort you and your family at this time.
