Harold R. Hastings Sr.

1934 - 2018

CAMBRIDGE - Harold R. Hastings Sr. passed away suddenly at home on Feb. 26, 2018. He was born in Madison on Oct. 8, 1934, and was raised in Dorchester County. He loved and lived his life to the fullest.
Ray, as he was known to everyone, was the son of the late Harlan and Pearlina Cheesman Hastings. Ray was married to the late Betty E. Abbott Fitzhugh Hastings, who passed away on June 29, 2014. Ray's first wife was Thelma Lewis Hastings.
Mr. Hastings was educated in Dorchester County and worked in construction most of his life. He enjoyed raising all kinds of animals, going to auction sales and working in his garden. Most recently, he enjoyed his morning coffee at McDonald's with his coffee buddies.
Mr. Hastings is survived by three sons, Ulman "Spanky" Hastings and wife Sherry, Mark Hastings, Harold R. Hastings Jr.; a stepson, Logan Fitzhugh and wife Diane "Donnie;" 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray also leaves behind his beloved dog, "Sweetie." Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Hastings is preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Phillip Hastings; a stepson, James Fitzhugh; five brothers, Grover, Leroy, James, Burton and Billy Hastings; and two sisters, Anna Jean Gore and Virginia Moore.
Pallbearers will be Harold Ray Hastings Jr., Kyle Powley, Billy Hastings, Zachary Hastings, John Moore and Dutch Swann. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Swann and Billy Greenwood.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 2, 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home P.A. in Cambridge, with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
