Frances Gold Obituary

Mrs. Frances Gold, 84, died on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013. Funeral services are Monday, Jan. 7, at 12 noon in the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Memorial Home, 1500 Morris Ave., Union, N.J., with interment in Beth Israel Cemetery. Born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y., Fran graduated from City College of New York and with a master's degree from Brooklyn College. She married the late Gerald Gold in 1954. They resided for over 40 years in Westfield, N.J., and she was a teacher in the Roselle public school system, Roselle, N.J. She was formerly a member of the Temple Emanu-El of Westfield and its Women's Club. Fran moved to Brooksby Village Retirement Community in Peabody, Mass., in 2011. Having obtained the distinction of "life master" in bridge, playing cards was by far her greatest pastime. She was also a strong supporter of the arts, particularly the performance arts, subscribing to several theaters, opera and symphony. Fran loved to travel and made many trips with family and friends to Europe, Israel anad North America. Strong-willed, she actively promoted causes in the public interest and equality across race and gender. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her daughters, Leah Windgardner and Julie Gold; her grandchildren, Joshua Windgardner, Rebecca Windgardner, David Windgardner and Iris Gold-Rodal; sons-in-law, James Windgardner and Michael Rodal; her sister, Nancy Goldstein, and nieces, Lori Rosenkrantz and Susan Davis.

I was saddened to learn of Fran's passing. She was a passionate and caring educator and colleague. Her husband Gerry was one of my all-time favorite teachers. Now they are together again. Max and I send our heartfelt sympathy to their family. You were Blessed to have them in your lives, and I know their spirits will be in your hearts forever. May God give you strength and comfort through these difficult days.
