Samuel Barratt Obituary

Carpenter, volunteer fireman, Navy veteran, 80 Samuel W. Barratt of Morris Township passed away on Sept. 28, 2008, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years old. The visitation will be held at Doyle's Funeral Home, 106 Maple Ave., Morristown, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Virgil Church, Morris Plains. Interment will follow at the Holy Rood Cemetery, Morristown. Born in Bernardsville, Mr. Barratt lived his entire life in Morris Township after serving in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948. Mr. Barratt was a union carpenter with locals 455 in Pluckeman and 620 in Madison. He taught at the Morris County Vocational Technical School in the 1980s. He was a member of the Morristown Ambulance Squad before joining the Fairchild Fire Company in 1959. He was a past battalion chief and served as a secretary for the Fairchild Fire Company and the Morris Township Fireman's Relief Association and N.J. Exempt Fireman's Association. In the past, Mr. Barratt participated in Appalachian Outreach Projects, was an assistant Boy Scout leader for Troop 39 in Morris Plains, served on the election board and was a past president of the Holy Name Society at St. Virgil's Church. Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Jane (Cooney); his daughters, Mary Jane Swenson of Morris Plains, Kathleen Lillie of Turnersville and Patricia Stopper and her husband, Carl, of Morris Plains; her grandchildren, Matthew Swenson and his wife, Gina, Tara Swenson, Brian Swenson, Samuel Lillie, Emily Lillie, Timothy Lillie, Brianna Stopper and Gabriella Stopper, and dear brother of Ann McCarthy, Rosemary Choice and the late Peggy McCabe. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam's name to the Fairchild Fire Company, 2 Burnham Rd., Morris Plains, N.J. 07950.

Dear Patty,
I was sorry to hear about your Dad. I remember the stories you told me about him. On behalf of myself and the Hampton Twp Fire & Rescue Dept please except our sincere condolences.
