William Gillis Obituary

William L. "Bill" Gillis, 82, of Middletown, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. Visitation will take place at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave. Red Bank, on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. James R.C. Church in Red Bank on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. Please visit the William L. "Bill" Gillis' memorial website, available at www.sidun.com. Bill was born in East Orange, grew up in Reading, Pa., and moved to Middletown in 1955. He served our country as a staff sergeant in the 752nd Tank Battalion during World War II in Italy, and was wounded during a battle near Anzio and Monte Cassino. Bill returned home to complete his education at Reading High School in Pennsylvania. He then attended Rutgers University, receiving his B.S. in education. He was employed for over 30 years as an accountant by RCA in Harrison and later RCA in Somerville until his retirement. Through the years he was active in Boy Scouts Troop 127 in Lincroft and was an umpire for the Lincroft Little League. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Hilda Gillis, and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emily; two sons, William Jeff Gillis and his wife, Ellen, of Seabrook, Texas, and Eric M. Gillis and his wife, Janice Davis, of Houston; his brother, Richard Gillis and his wife, Frances, of Morristown, and granddaughter, Katherine Gillis of Seabrook, Texas. Memorial donations can be made in Bill's memory to the American Kidney Foundation 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010 Rockville, Md. 20852.
