Patricia BRISON Obituary

BRISON, Patricia Hulme
Patricia Hulme Brison died peacefully at home on March 11, 2015, at the age of 71. She was born in Houston, Texas, on September 18, 1943, to Margery Chadick Hulme and James Homer Hulme, Jr. She attended Reagan High School and was a member of the Reagan Red Coats. In 1964, she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and began a career in teaching. She married Fred Robert Brison, Jr. on July 11, 1964, and after living in Austin and Belgium, they settled in Houston. While staying home to raise her two children, Patricia was very active as a volunteer with the Harris County Heritage Society in Sam Houston Park. She served as Chairman of the Children's Museum, Docent Training Chairman, Docent Chairman, Volunteer Chairman and many other positions during her 20 years of service from 1975 to 1995.

In 1992, Patricia joined the faculty at Bellaire High School where she taught honors American history, government, economics, and world geography. While at Bellaire, she was recognized as PTO Outstanding Teacher of the Year and was chosen as a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Outreach program participant. Patricia loved Texas history, U.S. history and particularly World War II and women's history. But most of all she loved sharing her knowledge with her students and making history "come alive" for teenagers.

In 2005, Patricia retired to Cedar Park, Texas, to be nearer to her granddaughters. She joined the Austin Junior Forum and was chosen outstanding new member in 2009. Patricia loved traveling, playing bridge, and hosting luncheons, dinners and her annual Valentine's Tea. Friends and family will remember Patricia as a true "Pollyanna" because she was always the optimist and viewed life as a grand adventure. Her alert mind, her pride, and her spirit remained with her until the end.

Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Robert Brison, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Amanda Brison Swann, son-in-law Philip Swann, and granddaughters Claire and Georgia; her son Robert Andrew Brison (NYC); her sister Anne Hulme Sloan (Houston); her brother Dr. Jim Hulme (Houston); her nieces Elizabeth Donnelly and Michelle Hulme; her nephew Dr. Scott DeMers; great-nieces Margaret Donnelly and Annika DeMers; and great-nephew James Donnelly.

A celebration of Patricia's life will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015, at 11:00 am at the Bethany United Methodist Church, 10010 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas 78750. A reception will follow at the Twin Creeks Country Club, 3201 Twin Creeks Club Drive, Cedar Park, Texas. On Thursday, April 9, 2015, at 3:00 pm a small memorial hosted by her sister, Anne Sloan, will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1819 Heights Boulevard, Houston, Texas.

I'm so sad to hear that Mrs. Brison passed away. I was just looking her up to see how she was doing. She was a wonderful teacher and mentor. In junior year of high school, she was one of my US History teachers, and gave me a huge appreciation for American History. I especially loved her slideshow of her trip to Normandy in France which really gave me an appreciation for the sacrifices made during WWII. Moreover, Mrs. Brison was my Academic Challenge coach that year and the year after and was my chaperone to Yellowstone and Washington DC. She was so nurturing and even let us stay in her home in Temple before a tournament in that area, and I have such fond memories of those times. In my senior year I fell in with a bad crowd during Yellowstone, and she was a guiding light that allowed me to eventually move on from those group of friends, when I started college. I'm so thankful for her mentorship, and will always be thinking of her.

Andrew and Amanda , you might not know how much we thought of your mom, of all of you, during our times together in Houston, but our memories are so dear. Your mom was a stand out, stand up person so very vibrant and intelligent, and FUN! There is no doubt you all will miss her very much but what a bright light to have in your lives for as long as you did.
There is much to add about memories of you all but for now will just say that our prayer-thoughts and hearts go out to you as you walk through this part of your journey without her in your physical world but forever and always with you in spirit and heart.

To say that Mrs. Brison was a fantastic teacher would be an understatement. No History class at Bellaire ever topped her U.S. History class in my time there. Even in a class that was at the end of the day, she always taught with such enthusiasm that it inspired many of us to learn more than what the class required. I still recall her going beyond the text book by providing various articles and showing films that helped us better understand important times in American history.

Above all else she was kind, fair, and genuinely wanted her students to succeed. I'm grateful to have had her as a teacher and my sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones.

She will reside forever in our hearts. We will miss her quick wit & incredible stories. She was a wealth of knowledge on many levels, a true intellect. She was a friend whom we only knew for 9 years, but in those 9 years we came to love and adore her as if we had known her forever. She included us as if we were family, and she indeed became a part of our family.Patricia has a wealth of friends that she acquired over her lifetime. Once her friend, always her friend. She loved each and everyone as if they were her only friend. Everyone was special to her. We were blessed to live across the street from her in what she called "God's Neighborhood". The Gardens in Twin Creeks is an incredible community of people that love one another and look out for one another. Patricia was the Matriarch of our neighborhood. She will be missed by all who knew her. She had incredible strength and courage and a will that would not quit. She fought a good fight, and completed the tasks God sent her here for. We will miss her until we are reunited again. We send condolences and love to her family and all the others who loved her.
