I worked with Bernie during his years in Saudi Arabia in the pre Olympics years before Montreal.
I had been an asst coach at Southern Illinois Univ. I had coached many superior athletes there with Ivory Crockett being the world record holder in the 100 yd dash! Bernie and I became very close and when he asked me to go with him to Suadi Arabia. It was a great experience and working with Bernie turned into a great friendship! He was exceptional in his leadership and it helped the asst coaches grow and eventually go on and become exceptional. Great man! He was always a great friend. He asked me to take over the head coaching position for team at the 76" Olympics in Montreal. Following we finished 2nd in the Arab Games where in the past they were always last! The entire 4 years was a fabulous experience and changed all the US coaches that were there in a very positive way. Bernie, thank you for leading us to growing and becoming better coaches than we ever were! Berry, you changed all of us and we all walked away and became better Coaches and became some of the best in the USA. Thank you, Bernie! We´ll always love you and hopefully we´ve followed in your footsteps!!!

I was a friend of Carl's and visited the Wagner home on Notre Dame Ave. many times. I recall how warm and inviting Mrs. Wagner was to us awkward teens. I remember a birthday party for Carl where she loaded up the station wagon and drove us over to the beach. I also remember Mr. Wagner (Berny) taking Carl and I to a track meet he organized at Palo Alto HS, then taking us for hot fudge sundaes. While reading the article I learned of Carl's passing in 1989. I had last seen him in 1967 when he visited Belmont after leaving Belmont for Corvallis. What a legacy Berny has left, and I am happy to see the many, many grandchildren. My sincere condolences to the family and may Berny's legacy continue to flourish.
