Gene Overall Obituary

Overall, Gene

Gene Overall was born in Kennett, Missouri to Evelyn Marie Cooper and Landon J.C. Overall. He was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Dana (Pulis) Overall. He is survived by his brother Ted (June) Overall, his nephew, James D. Overall and his niece, Deborah S. Trask.

Gene was a survivor of childhood polio. He never let his physical condition impact his dreams. Early on he demonstrated a healthy curiosity, a sharp wit and a keen mind. He enjoyed studying people, history and the law. He was an avid reader of the Smithsonian, National Geographic and the daily newspaper. He especially enjoyed comic strips and crossword puzzles.

Gene graduated from Kennett High School and earned his B.A. in Sociology at Arkansas State University. After graduation he worked for the Parole Board in St. Louis for eight years. He continued his education at St. Louis University where he earned degree in Jurisprudence. He passed the Missouri Bar Exam in 1980.

Gene practiced law with St. Louis County and later served as the Sheriff of St. Louis County for ten years. He and Dana gave back to our community by writing wills and trusts for senior adults. He also taught Criminal Justice at Lindenwood University. Gene was a consummate professional.

Gene was an excellent repository of St. Louis history. He was a natural storyteller whose memory of places, dates and details served him well. He had a love for theme parks. Disney World was one of his favorites. Gene enjoyed good food. He always knew the best places to eat. He excelled at St. Louis style BBQ. Gene possessed a sometimes caustic wit but had a gentle and caring heart. He was a great friend and confidante.

Gene was a follower of Jesus. He served in many leadership roles at First Baptist Church of Crestwood: deacon, Bible Teacher, Personnel Chair, newsletter editor, choir, and Worship Team. His contribution to our community and his presence will be greatly missed. He was well loved.

Special thanks to Sue Waggoner and Zach Wessels for their care of Gene which collectively spanned eight years. "He couldn't have done it without you!"

I wish so much that I could attend the service, but I live in Virginia now. Gene became a good friend in law school at SLU, and I was a great admirer of his during and after that. He will be missed.
