Gil Sloan married my cousin Diana Casto. Her mother was a Bellamy; my mother was a Bellamy . Their father came from Grantham Linconshire and their mother from Newark, Notts.
I first met Gil in 1959 in Miami when he was with the Miami Herald and we have been friends since then. Knowing him it would be impossible NOT to notice his keen dry sense of humour. We met from time to time either in the US or in my home in Barbados. I valued his friendship throughout his life. May he rest in peace.

I'm sorry I never got an opportunity to sit and talk with Gil as an adult. Dad and mom said he had a wonderful wicked sense of humor and I feel certain we would have enjoyed that quality in each other. We did exchange many letters, which I'll cherish. Jennifer and Cathryn and Adam, I will be with you in spirit at the service and will look forward to our continued relationship.

Gil Sloan. Peerless baseball writer and humorist. A mentor and guide to his brother Mert, and a loving companion to eldest brother, Irv. We spent so many wonderful hours together on the playing fields, learning to love and play baseball. He learned from his father, A.L., the great political editor, the fundamentals of being a fine newspaper writer. Gil was sharp and had a marvelous sense of humor, which made his baseball articles so informative and entertaining. Gil Sloan, a man who so loved his family – Diane, Jennifer, Adam and Cathryn – that from afar we felt his closeness to family. May the Lord bless him and keep him.

I know my uncle Gil and I had a lot in common, and though we did not get to spend much time together in life, he will live on in my heart and mind.

Love to all my family in the midwest, I am so sorry for your loss - thank you for inviting me and my daughter Melissa to attend Uncle Gil's service, it will be very special. As you know, my father Irving, Gil's brother, would love to attend but cannot, but he will be with us in spirit and thought - Elizabeth
