Richard Hoffmann Obituary

Reverend Richard "Dick" Hoffmann, of Stevens Point, passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2023, under the care of hospice, at the age of 87.

Dick was born July 25, 1936 in Minneapolis, MN, not far from the family's home in Faribault, MN. He was the second child of Erwin Louis and Martha Magdalene (Peters) Hoffman. He was baptized and welcomed into Christ's family early in life. The family moved to Rock Island, IL where he attended Immanuel Lutheran parochial school for 8 years and graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1950. Additionally, he was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church at the hands of the Rev. Herman F. C. Wetzel and remained faithful in the use of the word and the sacraments until his death. Dick attended high school at Rock Island High School until his senior year when he transferred to Bethany Lutheran High School in Mankato, MN in 1953.

Following high school, he attended Concordia College in Milwaukee, WI and Concordia Senior College in Ft. Wayne, IN. He then attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO for three years followed by an internship at Milwaukee Avenue Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from the Seminary and was ordained in 1962. That same year, he married Faith Elisabeth Piepkorn on June 9, 1962, kept holy and unbroken until her death, for 49 years 7 months and 26 days. During June 1962, Dick was commissioned as Chaplain (2 Lt) in the US Army serving in the Army Reserve both in the Nebraska National Guard and the Missouri National Guard until being honorably discharged. Dick served as pastor of Lutheran congregations in Malcolm and Pleasant Dale, NE; North St. Louis, MO; Belton and Raymore, MO and two congregations in St. Louis County, MO as vacancy pastor. He remained a pastor, retired and in good standing, in the Central States Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Upon relocating to Stevens Point, Dick immersed and invested himself in the vibrant community at Dimensions Living Stevens Point where he regularly played music, crafted songs for exercise class, facilitated book club and lost at Bingo. In his spare time, he played Sudoku and regularly earned genius status playing the NYT Spelling Bee.

Those who wait for the last day and the resurrection to life that lasts forever are his two children, Anne Elisabeth of Stevens Point, WI and Christopher Carl of St. Louis, MO; one granddaughter, Lexie Hauskins of Decatur, IL; and a host of relatives and friends in Christ.

Dick was preceded into the presence of the risen Christ by his father and mother, Erwin and Martha; sister Carol (Bill) Kellenberger; sister and brother-in-law Gloria and Gerald Milbrath.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE AND MAY LIGHT ETERNAL SHINE UPON HIM

May your memories give you peace and comfort of your loved one. Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for the loss of your loved one. May GOD be with you all during this difficult time. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus.
