Hugh H. Moore was born November 17, 1920 in Benmoore, MS, a small town named after his grandfather, to Violet and Hugh Wilson Moore. He died at his home in Pascagoula on May 29, 2007.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jane Lamar Moore; two sons, Michael Cameron Moore (Tisha) and Hugh Wilson Moore (Kay); three daughters, Jane Moore Pickett (Jack), Mary Lisa Ash (Scott), and Kelly Ann Hanning (Franz). He was "Big Daddy" to 12 adoring grandchildren, Jackson Pickett, Kyle Moore, Alex Pickett, Colin Ash, Kaitlyn Pickett, Wil Moore, Evan Ash, Rachel Moore, Abby Moore, Tyson Hanning, Olivia Hanning and Benjamin Moore. Hugh was blessed with one brother, Ben C. Moore and sister-in-law, Anne. He was the favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Hugh Moore graduated from St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, MS, and then attended the University of Mississippi where he quickly became a campus leader and favorite. He was the President of Kappa Alpha fraternity, editor of a school humor magazine, and served on many campus committees dedicated to providing fun and entertainment to the student body. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 and served five years in the European and African regions in the Second Armored Division during World War II. During this time, he earned the rank of sergeant, a Purple Heart and other medals of commendation. After the war, he returned to Ole Miss and met "the prettiest girl on campus", Jane Lamar. After a long courtship, Miss Lamar finally surrendered to Hugh's undeniable charm and perseverance and became his wife. During their happily married life they lived in Jackson, Long Beach and Pascagoula, and created a loving and nurturing home for five children.
Hugh made his living in real estate development and sales. He worked with other leaders to develop many of the neighborhoods in Pascagoula, Gautier and Diamondhead. He spent many of his working years in managerial roles in property development companies, where his guidance, easy style and sense of humor earned him a long list of grateful employees and many life long friends around the country.
Many people will remember Hugh for his ability to tell a story, his sense of humor, and his ability to make anyone he listened to feel as if he or she were the most important person in the world. It can be truly said that Hugh never met a person he didn't like, and no one that ever met him walked away without a smile.
The family will receive friends Thursday May 31, 2007 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula.
