Phyllis Maywhort

1931 - 2019

Phyllis Maywhort, 87, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2019 after a serious fall in her home. Born on December 21,1931 to William and Esther Watson at Sunset Farm, Charlton, Massachusetts. After her mother passed away, her father remarried, and Lucille Gustafson became Phyllis' loving mother. The Watsons were a happy blended family of 6 children. Always a high achiever, she graduated from Phoenix College then earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish and her master's degree in English at Arizona State University, summa cum laude. She taught Spanish and English for several years in Los Angeles Public Schools. Then Phyllis entered her lifelong career of real estate sales and management.
In 1974, Phyllis married the love of her life, Frances (Corkey) Maywhort and lived in Sunset Beach. The Maywhorts enjoyed boating and were active members of the Marina Yacht Club of Long Beach. They also were past members of the Seal Beach Yacht Club. They loved Catalina Island and spent several weeks every summer on their mooring in the Isthmus. They were active snow skiers and travelers around the world. They also were active with the Elks Lodge Recreational Vehicle group and traveled throughout the states including long trips in Alaska.
Phyllis was active in the Sunset Beach Woman's Club, "Las Damas", and was past president. She was also past president of the O.C. League of Woman Voters.
Phyllis was pre-deceased by her parents, William & Lucille Watson, her husband Corkey Maywhort and her brother, William Watson of Texas. Siblings Marjorie Easterbrook of Massachusetts, Warren Watson of Maryland, Mary Lu Clark of Virginia, and Nancy Watson of Maine survive her. She also leaves behind daughter Julie Garrison (Lloyd), stepchildren Michael Maywhort and Kirk Maywhort (Shauna), 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at the Sunset Beach Community Center (Old Fire Station), on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation or to your favorite charity.
