I took several classes with Jay in 1974-1975 at FIU. He introduced me as his "colleague" as I was a few years older than the other students. I have been proud of that title for the rest of my life, an honor unmatched since. It is my personal, deep loss that I failed to keep in touch after I graduated, but I thought of Jay very often, and his teachings have influenced me both professionally and personally for my entire career. Thank you Dr. Jay S. Mendell, I hope you can feel my gratitude and love, wherever you may be.

Dr. Mendell was a phenomenal, priceless teacher and person. As students, we looked forward to the twists he would put in his lectures and homework assignments, and we all appreciated him immensely. He helped many of us outside the classroom setting, sometimes years after we had graduated. He was a gem and I am very happy to have gotten the benefit of his wisdom, teaching, and sense of humor. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

Only recently did I learn of Dr. Mendell's passing. I feel truly fortunate to have taken him for 2 classes at FAU. I have had many professors and classes with no memory of most. However, I will always remember Dr. Mendell as a mentor, friend and the epitome of a kind and wise professor who genuinely cared about his students and their educations. I feel better for having known him and studied with him and I miss our conversations, his sense of humor and good nature. Dr. M. you touched the lives of countless people---thank you for everything, I will never forget you my friend.

Dr. Jay Mendell was a unique intellectual. He was truly polymathic in his interests. He could take a group of rational thinking Ph.D. students like myself and force us to think outside of the box through his FAU doctoral course in Visionary and Creative Management. He was my friend and mentor and the person I argued with the most and I always held him in high esteem. He saw something in me that many others did not and he pulled me through advanced multivariate statistics which made my own Ph.D. a reality. I will truly miss him and the world has lost a global futurist.

I graduated FAU in 1987 and cannot recall the names of most of my professors, with the exception of Dr. Mendell. His class was unique. Around 6 of us plus Dr. Mendell, sitting around a table, discussing articles from the newspaper, relaxed, no books, no structure. He always brought with him a paper bag with an apple because he needed to eat to regulate his blood sugar. Funny the things you retain. Obviously that I even retained this meant Dr. Mendell was special. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I was so sad to hear the news of Dr Mendell's passing. His spirit was uncompromising and his wit and his provocateur presence will be missed by many, including me. I hope you are well, Joan, and Patches too.

Jay was my mentor and friend for almost ten years. I will always remember his kind spirit and his desire to help whenever I asked for it. I miss him already but know that he needed to be in a better place where he didn't suffer. Rest In Peace Jay.
