Lois Bolton Obituary

Lois Hanson Bolton, 75, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on May 27, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. In her final days, Lois was surrounded by many of her family, friends, and loved ones.

Lois was born to Clifford Tange Hanson and Dorothy Florence Hanson on October 30, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was raised with older brother, Don Hanson, and younger brother, Neil Hanson, in Blair, Nebraska. The Hanson's moved to Salem, Oregon in 1956 and then Waverly, Iowa in 1959 before returning to Blair in 1963. According to her brothers, Lois was infinitely kind, suffered no bullies, and was a fierce protector of those she held dear.

After earning a BS and MS in Biology at Mankato State University in Minnesota, Lois settled in South Florida where she started a family and began her career as an educator. Her 27 year career at Broward College began in 1983 as a Professor in the Biology department, and she rose to the ranks of Department Head, Academic Dean, and Provost. Along the way, and while raising two children, she earned her EdD from Florida International University.

Lois was resolute in her commitment to education. She was always a student advocate and made every effort to provide a quality education and lift students to reach their greatest potential. She championed human rights, women's rights, and equality for all. Whenever these values were challenged, she would always stand her ground with bravery, composure, and grace.

Lois was a beloved mother. She was the foundation of the family – always steadfast in her beliefs, her integrity, her strength, and her love. Her code of ethics was unwavering, and her compassion was unsparing. She always knew when a hug was needed, and she was always there to give one. She was a beacon of warmth, optimism, and positivity.

As both a mother and an educator, she passed on these values and virtues to the next generation. She encouraged and nurtured the best in all who knew her.

After retirement in 2010, Lois became an avid adventurer and traveler and cultivated deep and amazing friendships. She went on many adventures around the world which included yoga overlooking the caldera in Santorini, Greece; touring the coast, countryside, and vineyards of Italy; sampling the cafes, patisseries, and charcuteries in Paris; exploring the gardens, museums, and theatres in Vienna; cruising the coasts of Hawaii, Patagonia, and Cape Horn; hiking Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and Zion; wandering the highlands, lochs, and castles of Scotland; snorkeling the Florida Keys and Maui; visiting friends and family across the country; and even some impromptu rooftop, disco-dancing in Las Vegas!

Lois lived an extraordinary and love-filled life. She will be missed by all who knew her, more than words can express.

She is predeceased by parents Clifford and Florence Hanson, and she is survived by former husband Wade Bolton; two children, Jeremy and Chelsea Bolton; and two brothers, Neil and Don Hanson.

A memorial has been created to celebrate the life of Lois Bolton. Friends, family, and loved ones have contributed and shared many thoughts, prayers, tributes, and memories to create this loving memorial.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Lois Bolton passed away over a year ago. I had the honor and pleasure to work for and with Lois for two years before she retired. Lois hired me as Central Campus' dean of academic affairs, and I will never forget her wit, humor, twinkle in her eyes, smile, honesty, student-centeredness, and great respect for BC Central Campus' full-time and part-time faculty and staff who she devotedly served and represented.

Lois cared for and protected her team members, and she earned the respect and admiration of her Central Campus and Broward College District colleagues who knew what she stood for as a campus, college, and community leader. I will always treasure my informal meetings and conversations with Lois on late Friday afternoons (when no one else was around in Building 1). I wish I could have worked with and for Lois for more years at BC Central Campus.

On the one year anniversary of her passing, my deepest condolences to her children, family, and friends who knew and loved her. May Lois rest in peace, and the good Lord reward her exemplary work, ethical leadership, love of her family and friends, good character, and a life well lived.

Lois legacy will remain for years to come, through her friends, colleagues and students. She was a well-polished gem shinning with passion and ethics at Broward College. She was a true friend to me as well. I miss her...

When I came to BC in the 90s, Lois was one of the first to reach out and make me feel at home. She was a wonderful colleague and one of the most exceptionally nice and kind people you could ever hope to meet. I cannot recall seeing her without a smile and a positive attitude. Our campus was never the same place after she retired. Lois will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

, during good and not so good times... We started our friendship at a Conference, then we began walking every weekend on Las Olas and nurturing a solid friendship. She retired but we still saw each other when possible - I visited a couple of times in the last months and I tried to visit her before I travelled to Spain in the late Spring, but she was not feeling well. I hoped I would see her upon my return, but she had already left this earthy world, making sure everything was in order for her loved ones left behind... Lois and I shared a special friendship, we both encouraged each other not to dwell on the bad hands we might have been dealt, but to be resilient, survivors and achievers. She was a mentor, a friend, someone I admire and love. I will miss her a lot...
