JOHNSON, M.D., Herbert Fraser "Herb"

was born December 6, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan and passed peacefully at home in Day, Florida November 10, 2018 from complications related to cancer caused by agent orange. He was surrounded by his family as he passed. The Johnsons moved to Tampa, Florida when he was a child, and he graduated Hillsborough High School in 1950. Dr. Johnson was a double major at Duke University Army ROTC graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (1954) and Medical School (1958). He did his residency in radiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Johnson was a commissioned Army officer at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC and Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver, CO before serving two tours of duty in Viet Nam at the 24th Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh Post and 93rd Evacuation Hospital, Saigon. He was honorably discharged as a Major. He returned to Tampa where he worked as a radiologist at Tampa General Hospital and enjoyed volunteering at the Judeo-Christian Clinic. He later practiced family medicine in North Carolina and returned to Florida to practice in Lafayette County in 1998. Dr. Johnson was proud of his 50 years of sobriety and he sponsored many persons through AA while also facilitating meetings and mentoring at the Mayo Correctional Facility. He was predeceased by his parents, John "Alex" Alexander and Mary MacLean Johnson; brother, Donald Johnson; and sister, Anna Johnson, with whom he is sharing a glorious homecoming. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice; his appreciative children Jan Johnson Gorrie (Carter McCain) of Tampa, FL, Thomas F. Johnson (Alison) of Charleston, SC; stepdaughter, Alison Ashmead (Dave) of Orange Park, FL; and adoring grandchildren, Reece Gorrie, Sally Gorrie, Kaylee Rowell, Copeland Johnson, and Boyd Johnson. Dr. Johnson's whole-body was donated to Duke University's anatomical gift program, where his love of Duke and his life's work will be honored. A gathering to celebrate Dr. Johnson's life will be held at the Day Community Center, 4673 N. County Road 53, Mayo, FL 32066, December 9, 2018 at 2 pm.
