Lawrence BROER Obituary

BROER, Dr. Lawrence R. 84, passed away on November 30, 2022, at his home in Tampa. Dr. Broer retired from the University of South Florida in 2003 as Professor Emeritus of English, although for a number of years, he continued to teach graduate students and supervise their research. He was an internationally acclaimed scholar of modern and postmodern literature. He published widely in critical collections and professional journals and authored or edited nine books, including Hemingway's Spanish Tragedy (1973), Sanity Plea: Schizophrenia in the Novels of Kurt Vonnegut (1989), Rabbit Tales: Poetry and Politics in John Updike's Novels (1998), Hemingway and Women: Female Critics and the Female Voice (2002) edited with Gloria Holland, and Vonnegut and Hemingway: Writers at War (2012). While at USF, he received the Theodore and Vanette Askounes-Ashford Distinguished Scholar Award and the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. He served as a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Paris in 1981 and 1984, and he was a senior Fulbright Specialist for the past five years. His life outside of teaching and writing was filled with travels abroad, often to important academic conferences at which he presented papers. He was also an ardent fan of college sports, especially Florida State University athletics, and was known to enjoy watching the Seminoles with a few close friends from his undergraduate and graduate days at FSU. He took pride in his own athletic abilities, which were many and varied, but perhaps his being quarterback for the USF Faculty Football Team was "The Crown." After retiring, he was a participant in senior softball leagues into his eighties. He is survived by his partner, Béatrice Frouté De Domec; his two sons, Joshua Broer and Wesley Broer; and his stepson, Ashkahn Ardalan.

Loved him so much I took three courses in a row with him. I learned so much. He was a passionate Professor. I became a Professor of psychology myself and tried to emulate his casual yet engaging teaching style. May he rest in peace wherever that may be!

Larry meant so much to me. The time I spent in his classroom and as his researcher was among the most rewarding of my life. When the annual Christmas card didn't arrive, I should have known something was wrong, but not this. I am so sorry he is no longer in the world.

Larry was my best man at our wedding way back in August 1958.
We had been conversing,(We live in NJ) and were discussing a trip to Paris this summer, one of Larry's favorite places. We had agreed to discuss it once the new year arrived. Accordingly, I called a few days ago and no one called back.
This is profoundly emotionally devastating to my wife and me.
I can honestly say --You were a good man Lar, rest in peace.

I recently learned of the passing of my cousin Larry. He was a few years older than I, and although we grew up thousands of miles apart we had a special bond. When he left for FSU he would always have time for me on spring and summer breaks. I will miss him for the rest of my life. Rest in Peace, Larry! Frank.

Am saddened to hear of LBs passing, he had a deep and positive influence on my life, my love for literature yes, but also how another's take on our world can help us shape our own point of view. "What's the author trying to tell us here?"
I'm glad to have known him.

Dr.Broer, with the greatest of sadness we´ve lost such a fine gentleman, kind, smart as a whip and generous with his time and knowledge. An athlete until his passing, Larry still possessed the legs of an elite athlete making him appear decades younger. No matter what you were thinking or trying to communicate Larry could put it into exactly the right words for you. His love of family as a given and his love of Carrollwood Village had no bounds. Dr. Broer you are missed greatly already

In 1973 I was in Larry's Narration and Description class. When I turned in a basketball story he invited me to try out for his team and I met Coach Dietrich and Herb Karl and we won the county league trophy in 1977. Thanks Larry for the happy memories.

I had Dr. Broer for freshman English at USF in 1968 and for a few classes after that. We had the opportunity to reconnect several times after that when I became an English professor and later Dean of Humanities at HCC. He left me with a love of literature that became a lifelong gift. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He will be remembered by so many of his former students.
