Philip FEDERICO Obituary



FEDERICO, Philip A., 77 of Land O' Lakes, Fla., passed away July 16, 2010. He was born on September 27, 1932 in Paterson, N.J., and was a retired circuit court judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit of Pinellas and Pasco County. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Maier; sons, Philip J. (Angie), Michael (Kristin) and Richard; daughters, Marybeth Storts (Craig) and Jean Marie Casimo; 10 grandchildren, Nicole Federico, Alexis and Nicholas Federico, Eric and Monica Storts, Noelle and Madison Casimo and Roman, Sophia and Gabriella Federico; a brother, Joseph (Ann); a sister-in-law, Dorothy Veach (Raymond); a brother-in-law, Fred Maier (Bonnie); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Judge Federico graduated from Fordham University with his Bachelors of Science degree in political science in 1953, and from Fordham University School of Law with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1958. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the U.S. Army, Counter Intelligence Corps, during the Korean War. He became a member of the New Jersey Bar Association in 1959 and the Florida Bar Association in 1970. After practicing law in New Jersey for 10 years, he and his wife, Barbara moved their family to Clearwater, Fla., in 1969. He was elected to be a county judge in Pinellas County, in September 1972, and began serving in that position in January 1973 through 1975, when he was appointed to the Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court by Governor Reubin Askew. He served as a circuit court judge from 1976 through December 1994 when he retired. He served as chief judge of the 6th Judicial Circuit from 1987 to 1991 during which time he oversaw the planning and construction start of the Criminal Justice Center that is located on 49th Street in Clearwater, and that continues to serve the residents of Pinellas County today. In retirement, he continued his law career as a civil mediator from 1994 to 2009. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis www.coalitionforpf.org. There is a memorial page for Judge Federico on the Coalition website. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2010, at Trinity Memorial Gardens. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in his honor at noon, tuesday, July 20, 2010, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Clearwater. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Gardens. My deepest sympathies are sent to all of you in your loss. Judge Federico was such a kind, considerate and compassionate man who cared deeply for everyone.
I knew Judge Federico as a Judicial Assistant to Judge Penick when I worked there. I have very fond memories from everyone I came in contact with.
I am so glad that his son is taking care of us here in Pinellas/Pasco County. I am now retired but keeping myself busy.
