Margaret Hughes Obituary

Margaret "Margo" Gannon Hughes

Clinton - Margaret M. (Fraher) Gannon Hughes, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 13, 2021. She is preceded in death by her first husband, John M. Gannon in 1994, and her second husband, John J. Hughes in 2016. Margo is survived by her devoted children and spouses: John Gannon & Kathleen of Auburn; Rita Kittredge & John; Marie Sargent & Dennis; Mary Iacobucci & Dave; Chrissy Poynton & Tim; all of Clinton; step-children Cheryl Hughes & Ronald Wood; John Hughes & Robin; David Hughes and Anne Marie; Kevin Hughes & Karen; and Tracy Sabotin & Joshua. She leaves her beloved siblings from Ireland: Sister Eugene Fraher, Alice Cotter and her late husband Danny, Paddy Fraher & Nora; Liam Fraher & Chris; sisters-in-law Peg Fraher and Nellie Fraher; thirteen grandchildren and five great-children; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family in Ireland and beyond, and countless dear friends, most notably her life-long best friend and confidant, Mary Ward, with whom she shared all of life's abundances and challenges. She is pre-deceased by her brothers Jackie Fraher and Dan Fraher of Ireland, her sisters Lena Fraher and Mary Cote of Clinton, and her nephew Jackie Cote.

Margo worked tirelessly as a nurse's aide always caring for others, as she did throughout her remarkable life, for several healthcare facilities including Worcester County and Clinton Hospitals, until retiring. She was a devout member and Eucharistic Minister at the former Our Lady of the Rosary Parish and St. John the Guardian of Our Lady Parish in Clinton. She was a life-long member of the Leprechaun Society of Clinton, the Hibernians of Our Lady of Knock, the Clinton Elks Lodge, and a dedicated volunteer for the CARE Food Pantry.

Margo was born in Scart House, County Waterford, Ireland, daughter of the late William & Rita (Kett) Fraher. She emigrated to the United States at the tender age of 18, settling in Clinton. She was deeply proud of her Irish heritage. The most important things in life to Margo were her deep and steadfast faith, her unyielding devotion to her family, and her endless loyalty to her friends in Clinton and in Ireland. Margo will always be remembered as a loving, kind, and compassionate person who genuinely loved people. What she cherished most in life was spending quality time with her family and countless friends. The door to her home and her heart were always open to those who wished to "stop in." Margo always ensured there was an abundance of food, including her homemade Irish Breads and Bailey's Irish Cream. Everyone enjoyed the Irish "Craic" while in her company. Those that were blessed to have known Margo witnessed her external and internal beauty. She was admired and well-respected as a strong and courageous woman who lived an exemplary life to the fullest. Margo made everyone she encountered in life feel like family never looking to be the center of attention. She was the type of friend and person who lifted you up with her unconditional love.

Above all, Margo was most proud of her role as family matriarch, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and Aunt. The Gannon Hughes family wish to express their profound gratitude to Right at Home Services and UMass HealthAlliance Hospice, especially, Erin Thompson, Margo's loving and caring niece and hospice nurse, who compassionately guided us during her journey home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Friday, September 17, 2021 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton, with burial to follow in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours from 4-7 PM on Thursday, September 16, 2021 in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Margo Hughes to: CARE Food Pantry, 149 Chestnut St., Clinton, MA 01510. Online condolences may be placed at

~there are so many things to think about Margo~ her smile, her giving ways, her Irish bread and homemade Irish cream that she "quietly" brought into our Irish suppers, Halloween costumes with Elly~and making a person feel they were the most important thing at that time when she spoke to you . . . endless thoughts!!

~May God hold you dear Margo, in the palm of his hand
