He chaired several retreats, was a leader in the Church Renew Group and was Vice President of the Christian Family Life Group. For the past five decades he served as the church's custodian and caretaker.

I wish I had been able to get down to the wake. Phyllis Konop let me know about PJ's passing. My sympathies to the family, especially to Lori... one of my most favorite students from a few years ago! For a brand new, young teacher back in the mid 70's, Paul was always a friendly face, helping hand and confidence booster when I needed it most. A true friend and a real gentleman.

Many fond and cherished memories come to mind when I think of PJ- his spirited presence in the halls of Bromfield, Memorial Day parades in Harvard, special friendships formed with his wonderful daughters, PJ and my grandfather sharing fire department stories, enjoying his attendance at my wedding to include the "reception after the reception" at my parents' house...just to name a few! I feel honored and blessed to have had my life's travels intersect, however brief, with that of such a wonderful man.

My heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with the Johnston family during this difficult time.

I have had the pleasure of knowing "Uncle Paul"and his wonderful family for my entire life. PJ and my father went to Bromfield together and remain friends today. I have learned many lessons from Uncle Paul on how to to be a great husband, father and friend. We are all truly blessed to have known and learned from him.

My deepest sympathies to Auntie Doris, Paula, Lori, Alan and the rest of Paul's family. My prayers are with you.

Best Wishes,

PJ was a very special part of my Bromfield years -- as influential and important to me as any of the wonderful teachers I had. I will cherish my memories of him. I send my heartfelt condolences to the Johnston family. Sincerely, Rachel Fine Moore (Bromfield '76)

Words can't express how grateful my family is to PJ. He was a wonderful friend to my father and mother in their final years. After my father died, PJ would pick up my mother's mail and stop by to check on her every day. What a woderful gentleman and a true inspiration!

Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Harvard, has to know the Johnston family. One of my most life-shaping memories is of the Memorial Day Parade honor guards and the laying of the wreath.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the ceremonies honoring PJ's life. Please know that I am there in spirit.

Kindy,
Louise St.John

PJ was a daily pleasure as I went through Bromfield. For many years we called each other "Cuz" because of a typo in the Harvard Post (don't remember if he was Paul Thurston or I was Janet Johnston...) but I was always proud to be able to call him my 'Cuz'. I wish each of the family members great joy in the many years of memories and love with him in your lives.
Sincerely, Janet Thurston Gonski

With a twinkle in his eye, "PJ"seemed to love and care about everyone. He was a living example of what it means to give. Service to others was his ministry. Without seeking personal attention, he was always giving of himself. His physical presence and those beautiful eyes will be missed but the memory of his faith, love of family and country, along with his generous commitment to others will not be forgotten. We are each richer because "PJ" touched our lives.

With my prayers and deepest sympathy to his family and those who loved him,
