Virginia Dodson Obituary

DODSON, Virginia SturdivantApril 3, 2009. Born April 16, 1917, Mrs. Dodson was the daughter of Trousdale Wills Sturdivant and Robert Sturdivant of Brownsville, Tennessee and later of Nashville. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, K. Harlan Dodson, Jr.; brother, Robert Wills Sturdivant and sister, Trousdale Sturdivant Jackson. Mrs. Dodson is survived by her children, K. Harlan Dodson III (Margaret Behm), Marie Dodson Maxwell (Porter) and John Christopher Dodson, all of Nashville; grandchildren, Kemp Maxwell (Stephanie), Ginna Maxwell Rauls (Jason), Margaret Virginia Dodson, John Dodson, Harlan K. Dodson, Marie Dodson, Thomas Dodson; great grandchildren, Brittain and Ella Rauls, Asher, Raleigh, and Witt Maxwell; and sister, Elizabeth Sturdivant Sims (Watson) of Asheville, North Carolina. She graduated in 1939 from Vanderbilt University where she served as president of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Before marrying in 1941 she worked in the Vanderbilt Dean of Women's office and in the Athletic Department for Red Sanders and Bear Bryant. Mrs. Dodson was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Centennial Club for over 50 years, Ladies Hermitage Association, Vanderbilt Aid, and an avid bridge player. She was a supportive wife, and a great role model as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be remembered by many as a gracious hostess who was comfortable with people from all walks of life. She brightened our lives with her humorous and honest responses to everyday situations. The family appreciates the sincere kindness of Mary Dye and her staff of caregivers, the staff of The Blakeford Retirement Center and Burton Court, and the loving services provided by Alive Hospice. Dr. Todd Jones and Dr. Sandra Randleman will conduct a memorial service at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 6th at First Presbyterian Church with visitation in the Cheek House from 2:30 p.m. until time of service. I will always remember Mrs. Dodson having what I'm proud of in southern women - strength, generosity, pride, speaking your mind, and loyalty and leadership in her family. I know you and Nashville will miss her greatly.
