Fred Kelso Obituary

Fred E. Kelso Jr., age 82, of Brookville, Pa., passed away at the Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. Fred was born in Brookville, Pa., on March 7, 1935, to the late Fred E. Sr., and Mildred (Foulks) Kelso.
He attended and graduated from the Brookville High School with the class of 1953. He also served his country with the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged.
On Oct. 7, 1956, he married Martha "Anne" (Park) Kelso, in Stanton, Pa.; they have been together for over 60 years, and Anne survives him.
Fred was a farmer all of his life. He was also a third generation butcher and he had the Kelso Family Meat Market, of which he operated for over 37 years. After his retirement in 1989, Fred continued to help other local family owned meat markets.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Brookville, Pa., Hobah Lodge #276 in Brookville, Trout Unlimited, Sigel Sportsman's Club, and the Brookville Rifle Team.
Fred was very proud of his vegetable garden and he shared all the food he grew with friends and family; he loved having the first ripe tomatoes of the season. He enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing and his favorite fishing hole is located in Potter County. Fred liked spending time at Camp Finally in Cook Forest where his entire family has made memories for many years.
He had the skill of woodworking and he made many things; he was most notably known for the beautiful wood bowls he created. He would give these away as gifts and also they were sold at a few different consignment shops. He would also carve soapstone, of which he gave as gifts as well. After his retirement he enjoyed reading, and he would read every day. He mostly read "manly books" which included topics like war, mysteries and espionage. Fred also liked to travel, and his favorite place to go was Maui; He loved being there with his wife and extended family.
In addition to his wife Anne, Fred is survived by one daughter, Cindy Montgomery of Erie, Pa.; a set of twin sisters, Connie Borden of Brookville, Pa., and Carol (Guy) Baughman of Warren, Pa.; one granddaughter, Brandes (Nate) O'Connell of McKean, Pa.; one great-grandson, Hudson N. O'Connell of McKean, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Lucy (Jerry) Hepler of Anchorage, Alaska; as well as five nieces and two nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 1–4 p.m. and 5–8 p.m. at the Mckinney–d'Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA 15825. So sorry to hear of Fred's passing. When we were in school, he was very nice and so much fun. I would later enjoy talking to him at the meat market. My deepest sympathy to Anne and family. Love & Prayers.

I am very sad to learn of Fred's passing. We grew up as neighbors on Thompson Street. At that time, we called him 'Sonny' and he was a great friend. Several of us in the neighborhood built model planes, played ball in Marlin's Grove, rode bikes, camped, hunted and fished together.

Ann and family, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sad to hear of Fred's passing. He and Anne were the nicest couple in this world. We all were in the same high school class and they were always fun to be with. My deepest sympathy to Anne and the family. It was a pleasure to have known them, genuinely good people.
Fondest regards, Carole Shaffer Miller
