Marvin M. Matney, 85, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday, October 28, 2021 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 1, 1936 in New Castle, Indiana, a son of the late Owen and Myrtle (Gustin) Matney.
Marvin was a graduate of New Lisbon High School where he ran track and played basketball and baseball. He married the love of his life, Phyllis Wright, on July 14, 1957. Marvin was a lineman for Public Service Indiana, later Duke Energy, retiring after 33 years. His greatest love was farming, raising livestock and crops, which he did for 48 years at their farm just off of Farmer's Pike. Marvin dearly loved his grandchildren, planning Easter Egg Hunts, scary Halloween parties, and swimming with them in the family pool. Marvin had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great storyteller. Following retirement, Marvin and Phyllis enjoyed traveling. They visited all 50 states and Canada and enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Florida.
Those left to cherish Marvin's memory include his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Matney; three children, Terry (Debbie) Matney of Springport, Carol (David) Deiwert of Yorktown, and Scott (Carol) Matney of Straughn; five grandchildren, Christin (Dr. Kyle) Siewert, Sarah (Jeff) Becker, Jacob Deiwert, Marcy (Daniel) Paul, and Cody Matney; seven great-grandchildren, Cam, Kade, and Corina Siewert, Jackson and Nolan Becker, and Amelia and Lucas Paul; a sister, Delores Bennett; a brother, Jearld "Pete" (Deanna) Matney; a sister-in-law, Norma Matney; a brother- in-law, Don Wright, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eileen Neal and Jeanette Stapleton; a brother, Myron Matney and infant brother, Gerald Lee Matney.
Memorial contributions may be offered to New Lisbon Christian Church or the Henry County Hospice with envelopes available at the service.
Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, November 4, 2021 at New Lisbon Christian Church. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday at New Lisbon Christian Church, where Marvin was a long-time member and had served as a deacon. Pastor Mark Lomison will officiate.
