Dr. Fred Richard Jewell passed from death to life on Jan. 15, 2023. He was born Nov. 28, 1941, in New Albany, Ind., to the late Fred and Dorothy Jewell.
He earned his B.A. in 1965 and M.A. in 1967 from Indiana University. In 1975, he earned his Ed.D from Ball State University. Dr. Jewell was a professor of history and political science for 42 years at Harding University, where he influenced and mentored countless students. His career was highlighted by five international semesters abroad in Italy, Greece and England.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Alice, of 59 years and his children, Terri Atkins (Steve), Jeff Jewell, Jason Jewell (Vickie) and Laura Tyree (Jesse). He's also survived by 11 grandchildren: Terri's daughter, Ava; Jeff's children, Ali Windrow (Brent), Maddie, and J.C.; and Jason's children, Edward, William, Richard, James, Arthur, Stephen and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sister, Dianne Gardner, and numerous nieces, nephews, and honorary children.
