Arthur Sheffield Obituary

Mystic - Arthur C. Sheffield Jr., 93, of Mystic died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife, Floretta (Massey) Sheffield. He was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Newport, R.I., the son of Arthur and Thelma Sheffield.

He grew up in Newport and lived around the corner from his wife's family, but they didn't meet until they were teens. He and Floretta were married Dec. 31, 1954, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Newport.

Arthur proudly served for 28 years in the U.S. Army completing three tours of Korea and two tours of Vietnam and was honorably discharged as first sergeant E-8. He continued his career as an armed guard at Millstone for 20 years. He was a faithful member of the Chapel on the Thames and a member of the American Legion and VFW.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Joyce McCants and Rita Taylor and her husband Lavell; grandchildren: Aaron and Adrian Sheffield, Ja'Toya and Tre'Vaughn Tayler, Anthony McCants Jr., Dewon, Iesha and Shane Wheeler, and Jermaine and Tiffany Carter; and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Charles Sheffield, Elizabeth Harris, Charlotte Murphy, Ralph Sheffield and Frederick Sheffield; and a host of nieces and nephews, in-laws and friends. He is predeceased by his daughter Christine Wheeler; grandson Amann Sheffield; four brothers; and three sisters.

His family will greet relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.

I knew Arthur from my time at Millstone as well. He had a sharp wit and an excellent demeanor. The family is certainly and rightfully proud of his military service. I understand the stress deployment to a combat theater of operations can place on the soldier and the family. Job well done, good and faithful soldier!

I worked with Arthur for many years at Millstone Nuclear Power Station. He was a very hard working man who spoke lovingly and often about his family. This is a picture of him and his beautiful "Flo" from his retirement dinner in 2003. Rest easy my friend.

I worked 3rd shift with Arthur for many years, he helped train me. He was mischievous, proud and could calm a crisis with his humor. I´m sorry for your loss Flo, he talked about you often.
