Helga Twomey Obituary

New London - Helga H. Twomey, formerly of Pequot Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, in Las Vegas, where she moved in July to be closer to family. Helga was born in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Karola Lohse. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Twomey in 1987; and brother, Dieter Lohse.

She came to the United States as a military bride in 1960. She helped in family grinder shops in downtown Norwich prior to beginning her career at the Central Vermont Railroad, where she was promoted to Trainmaster-the first woman in that position in New England. She retired from CV and began working at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, NTI.

She is survived and will be missed by her two children, John Twomey (Gary) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Carolyn Pryor (Edward); grandchildren, Erin Pryor (Josh), Bend of Oregon; and Lindsay Pryor of Brooklyn, N.Y.; cousins, Petra Seltmann (Ulie) and Sandra Oswald in Mindelberg, Bayern, Germany. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Marie Twomey, Peggy Blake, and Isabelle Aleskiewicz (Matt).

She enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph's Church and will be missed by the money-counting teams. She will also be missed by her friends and dinner companions at the Harbour House.

A service at a later date will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helga's memory to Saint Joseph Church, 37 Squire Street, New London.

John....so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. We hope that the memories of all the good times will help soften the grief of her passing.

Carolyn & John,

I am sorry for your loss. It is with great fondness that I remember working with Helga and the gang at the Central Vermont Railway out of New London in the early ‘80’s before I took an assignment with the parent company in Detroit. She and Jim Beagle at Palmer, MA pretty much ran the 189 miles of CV’s Southern Division. I thought she was fair and evenhanded with us. Quite a contrast to first met her in an industrial setting where her grace, polish and charm...and warm smile...was so atypical to the usual railroad operating environment. When she planned special events such as a Christmas train for the children of current and retired employees using a suitably decorated locomotive and two cabooses, I could not refuse her request when she asked for crew volunteers.

It was a pleasure to have worked with her.

Carolyn & John, I'm so sorry to read the paper today and to hear of your moms passing. I have so many fond memories of your mom & dad and all of our Pfizer friends & family. We had so many fun bowling picnics at your home, I even remember riding out the blizzard of 78' at your house. Your mom always made room at the table for one more. They both went out of their way to make me feel safe. I'm praying for both of you and your families. It's been a difficult year and this news just adds so much more sorrow to 2020. Sending you prayers & love, Diane

Carolyn and Jon and family - so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of your parents. The Charleston with your dad, and those beautiful painted eggs that your mom made. Know that your are in our prayers.
