He was the son of the late John A. Deane Sr. and Ruth (Arnold) Deane, born Nov. 21, 1924 in Detroit, but raised in Assonet, Mass. He began his military career in 1941 proudly serving as a submariner during and after World War II in the Pacific theater on the Bluegill, Seafox and S-47 boats. After leaving the Navy he returned to Assonet where he met his future wife, Ivelle. Together they built a life moving to Mystic where he was employed for 32 years at Electric Boat retiring as the manager of engineering administration. During this time, he also served the Town of Groton as the planning commission chair and the zoning commission chair. His proudest accomplishment was being instrumental in the conception and building of the Allyn Street connector.

John was a founding and active member of the Sub Vets of World War II and an active member of the Kari-Hill VFW post of Niantic.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan Deane-Shinbrot and husband, Mitch Shinbrot, of Mystic and Martha Schwarzkopf and husband, Eric, of Niantic; two grandsons, John D. Deane of Groton and Steven Deane-Shinbrot of Arlington, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Wyllow, also of Groton; his brother, Robert Deane of Encinitas, Calif.; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Ivelle (Jette) Deane; and his second wife of 17 years, Vivian (Fricke) Deane.

His family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.

Patricia Barnes

I remember "Mr. Deane" fondly as our former neighbor on Daniel Brown Drive in Mystic. He was instrumental in giving me my first job - as a babysitter for the girls. He was a very nice man - a credit to his family and the community. The last time I saw him was at a memorial service for my father, Jack Barnes. I did so appreciate him attending that service. My sincere sympathies to Susan, Martha and the rest of his family.
