He was the beloved husband of Rose M. Garvey.
Thomas was born June 6, 1924, in Palmer, Mass. He lived in Chicopee and West Springfield, Mass., before moving to Windsor Locks about 40 years ago. He and his wife enjoyed Florida's warm sunshine for the last 12 winters.
Thomas served in the Army in World War II in Company K, 142nd Infantry, 36th Division, Texas unit, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the DAV.
Thomas worked for the Postal Service in West Springfield, Mass., for more than 30 years.
He enjoyed gardening and puttering around the house and the yard and was especially happy that the Red Sox finally won the Series. He also had a special affection for his two kitties, Sadie and Goldie.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 40 years; two daughters, Paula Garvey Bird, of Fairhaven, Mass., and Lisa Ellen Garvey, of Windsor Locks; two stepdaughters, Joan Simborski Mulkern, of Houston, and Rosanne Simborski Smyle, of Stonington; four grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin Mulkern and Audrey and Emmett Bird; two nieces, Norma Iacovo and Jennifer Rosner; and a grandnephew, Dominic Iacovo.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Church in Windsor Locks or the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington.
Thomas will be buried today, with military honors, in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Mass.
