60/40: Those were the odds Alfred Rose lived by. If the odds tipped slightly in his favor, he seized the opportunity. Al Rose was born in 1924 in Manhattan. He was a charter member of a group called "The Centuries," young men from his Upper West Side neighborhood. A month after Pearl Harbor, Al enlisted in the Marine Corps and served with honor in the South Pacific He was one of the honorable marines on the dock in Tokyo Sept. 5, 1945, when the Peace Treaty was signed. After the war, he settled in Southern California. Soon after his arrival in California, he married Fanchon Gross and had two children, Janet and Jake. In 1954, Al co-founded the Los Angeles advertising agency of Enyart and Rose. After he retired from advertising, he and his wife Fanchon traveled to many parts of the world. Al eventually settled in Palm Springs where he worked as a docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Whether he was known as Red Rose, Big Al, Blue Eyes, Alfee, Poppo or Sweetheart, he will be remembered by all who knew him. He told it the way it was and he lived his life like the title of his book. Al died of complications from congestive heart failure. He was 90 years old. Al is survived by his daughter Janet, his son Jake, four grandsons, and by his sweetheart of many years, Nancy Gettelman. A memorial for family and friends is planned for July 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Jake's house (3547 Mountain View Ave., Los Angeles).
