Raymond Edwards Obituary
Raymond D. Edwards, born Aug. 21, 1918 in Los Angeles, was raised in Glendale, California, and passed away Aug. 11, 2014 in Palm Desert, California. His parents, Irma and John, brother Joe, sister Evelyn and his wife of 64 years Editha, preceded him in death. Ray is a graduate of Glendale High School, Glendale College, and the University of California at Berkley. Upon graduation from Cal, he entered the Navy, received his commission and commanded a naval YMS in the South Pacific during World War II. After returning from the war, he married Editha Hoeft and began a long successful career with Glendale Federal Savings and Loan spanning over 40 years. Ray began as a teller and retired as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. He actively served the savings and loan industry holding many executive positions in several industry groups including director at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board of San Francisco, served as President of the California Savings and Loan League in addition to being President of the Conference of Federal Savings and Loan Associations. He was very active in his beloved Glendale, supporting the local community in numerous ways: Glendale Community College, United Way, Red Cross, Glendale Symphony Orchestra, Glendale Community Foundation and the Glendale Kiwanis Club. Ray was a long time member of Oakmont Country Club, and upon retirement moved to Rancho Mirage, Calif., where he enjoyed golf at Thunderbird and Sunrise Country Clubs. He will be remembered for his high business ethics, generosity, gracious smile, "table topic" discussions, and his love of sports and games. He is survived by his wife Norma Kleinschmidt, daughter Joanne West (Dave), son Tom Edwards (Cathy), six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who called him "Great Papa"and many nieces and nephews. Services will be private. Donations may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association or American Macular Degeneration Foundation Inc.
