Herman Allen Jr. Obituary

Herman Layman Allen Jr., 84, of Hodgenville, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.

He was a member of Wesley Meadows United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the administrative board and also had been the captain of the church dart ball team for years. Herman graduated from Rineyville High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as an aircraft mechanic for four years. When he returned from the Air Force in 1960, he was working at the family garage when Mr. H.L. Perkins, principal of Rineyville High School, came by and said "Get in, I am taking you to school to meet Ms. LaRue County." Betty was teaching when they walked in her classroom.  He said "Ms. Clark, I want you to meet Junior."  The rest is history. Herman and Betty were married on Aug. 19, 1961, and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. Herman worked as service manager for more than 30 years at a car dealership, which has been Pate Motor Company, Tinsley Olds and Cadillac and Wilson Olds and Cadillac in Elizabethtown. After retiring, he worked as a salesman for Garrett's Furniture in Hodgenville and did upholstery and picture framing on the side. He was an avid Kentucky basketball fan, who enjoyed life and loved playfully joking with others. He never met a stranger and always asked their name and where they were from

He was preceded in death by his parents, Layman and Margaret Allen

Herman is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Betty Clark Allen; two children, Cindy (Tim) Ford of Waddy and Troy (Debra) Allen of Guntown, Mississippi; a brother, Ralph (Sandy) Allen of Louisville; five grandchildren, Kevin (Sarah) Ford, Josh (Lauren) Ford and Emily, Ryan and Courtney Allen; and a great-grandson, Kooper Ford.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday, July 5, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with Brothers Andrew Singh, Wallace Votaw and Allen Firquin officiating. Burial follows in Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville.

Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and continues at 9:30 a.m.Monday at the funeral home.
