Maxine Smallwood Powell

Maxine Smallwood Powell, 89, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully knowing her eternal rest, on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Willow Creek Assisted Living. Even dealing with dementia, she never lost her sweet and kind spirit.

Maxine was a native of Big Clifty and a strong follower of Christ. As a military family, moving from location to location, Maxine was fully devoted to whatever church she was lead to. She treasured God's word and lived it out fully. Her love for family, church and people, showed in everything she did. She was known by the community as a columnist for her writings in the Hardin County Independent from 1996 to 2011.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Powell; a daughter, Annette West; her parents, Clarence and Anna Mae Smallwood; and four sisters, Ethel Cook, Evelyn Sallengs, Alberta Carswell and Bernadine Watkins.

Survivors include her three children, Mike (Sue) Powell of Lexington, Clarissa (David) Yates of Cecilia and Larry (Jenny) Powell of Fortville, Indiana; a son-in-law, Michael West of Cecilia; a sister, Emogene Hagan of Elizabethtown; a sister-in-law, Joann Merrifield of Leitchfield; 10 grandchildren, Jason (Magen), Charles (Janie), Nicholas (Autumn), William and Jack Powell, Philip (Belinda), Stephen (Jennifer) and John (Emily) West, Luke (Hannah) Yates and Lori (Jake) Larkin; 20 great-grandchildren, Caroline, Madeline, Gabriel, Benjamin, James, Zoe, Molly, Dottie and Primrose Powell, Caleb, Andrew, Jacob, Lana, Kara, Daniel (Monica), Roxie West, Addison Yates and Riley, Reid and Drake Larkin; and a special caregiver, Carolyn Taylor.

The funeral is at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Brother Mike Powell officiating. Burial follows in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
