John enjoyed many things in life: hunting, knife and gun collecting, and model building; but he enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, including his second family at Suisun Fire Protection District. John was a lifelong resident of Fairfield, and a graduate of Armijo High School, Class of 1963.
After 34 years of active service, John retired as a captain from Suisun Fire Protection District in 1997, at which time he was made a lifetime member. John spent many hours training rookie volunteers that have moved on to become professional firefighters. He was a fire investigator and a charter member of the Solano County Fire Investigation Unit. In 1993, he was awarded Firefighter of the Year and in 1998, he was president of the Solano County Firemans Association.
John is survived by his partner and best friend, Ellen Wilson; a son, Sean and wife, Wendy Wink and their K9 children, Malibu and Kodiak; a daughter, Shannon and husband, Robert Phillips and their four children, Meagan, Sarah, Candice and Joseph; a stepdaughter, Peggy Mayes; and five grandchildren, Thomas, Alex, Sarah, Amanda and AJ. There are also a countless number of people that had adopted John as dad.
Friends are invited for a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfield. Pastor Dan Molyneaux will officiate. Following the service, a life celebration will be held at the Suisun Fire District Main Station.
Inurnment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Suisun Fire District or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
