CHARLOTTE - Dr. Percival L. Everett passed away peacefully on May 1, 2010. Dr. Everett was born in Columbia, S.C., on August 1, 1933, and he was the son of the late Dr. Benjamin A. He received his undergraduate education from Allen University, served two years as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, then received his postgraduate education from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tenn.

He was also a former trustee of the Capital City Development Foundation and served as a board member for the United Way of the Midlands and for the Ronald McDonald House. Dr. Everett was the first black individual to serve on the South Carolina Board of Dentistry, where he also served as President.

Percival, I just learned of your father's death this evening and wanted you to know how sorry I am for your mom, Denise and you. My mother, who is here with me now, also sends her sympathy. We will reflect and mourn the loss of another great human being evolving from the struggles of their generation. We will always marvel at their accomplishments and admire their humility in the face of life's challenges. We know that their lives were lived with meaning and purpose. You all will find great comfort in these thoughts. Know that his work was done and that he will rest in peace. Love you, Dawne, Greg, Morgan and "Mom"

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
