Evan Powell Obituary

Evan Dennis Powell, 56, of Scranton, died peacefully surrounded by his family Friday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Scranton on Dec. 29, 1960, Dennis was the son of the late Ernest D. Powell Jr. and Theresa (Chestnut) Powell. He graduated valedictorian from MMI Preparatory School in Freeland, and continued his education at Harvard University. Dennis worked for the State of Pennsylvania as deputy director of probation and parole in Philadelphia, and retired in 2010. Dennis loved being on the golf course in the spring/summer and cheering on the Cleveland Browns in the fall/winter.

Dennis is the proud father of four beautiful daughters, Gia Fendeis, Buffalo, N.Y.; Navy Seaman Elyse Powell, Monterey, Calif.; Emma Powell, Reading, Pa.; Riley Powell, Chester, Md.; and a handsome son, Evan Powell, Reading, Pa. Also surviving are his sisters, Ellen Trusty (Terry), Ester Barnes (Darwin), Emily; brothers, Derek (Stephanie), Dever, Dean (Regina) and Drew (Simona); 15 nieces and nephews, some of whom affectionately called him "Uncle Mr. Powell"; and six great-nieces and nephews. Dennis walked through this journey with the love and support of Meghan McGoff, Scranton, at his side.

Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest D. Powell III.

Keeping in mind the importance of education in Dennis' life, a fund has been set up to help with higher education costs for his children. Memorial donations may be sent to Children of Dennis Powell Higher Education Fund, People's Security Bank & Trust, 1901 Sanderson Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.

There will be no calling hours and a private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

I was Dennis' roommate for four years at Harvard and have such wonderful, warm memories of this very special person. My entire family welcomed him into our home on numerous occasions and we were always made better by his presence. I am so sorry to hear of his passing at a way too young age. Please know that I will always have great memories of him and would love to share stories and photos with any of his family at any time. With warmest regards, Dan Kenary

It took me a while to write this because of the amount of regret i have for not going home and the pain I feel seeing your picture at the top of this page. I never got to tell you how i felt or show you what you have made of me. You have made me the man I am today and I will never forget the life lessons you have taught me.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dennis' passing. He always made me laugh whenever we were together. He was a great person to work with and I can say he touched my life in a positive way. To his children, please know that I'm truly honored to have known Dennis. Your dad was a great, funny, and quick-witted man who could light up any room.
