Janet Monahan, 87, of Scranton, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at St. Mary's Villa.
Born in Honesdale, daughter of the late Gustave and Florence Maushart, she was her class valedictorian at St. Paul's High School in Scranton and received her nursing degree from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Carbondale. She was a member of St. Paul's Church, its Altar and Rosary Society and the Theresian Prayer Group. Janet was a kind and compassionate nurse, who dedicated the majority of her career to caring for the sick and aged Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Marian Convent on the campus of Marywood College in Scranton.
Surviving are her three children, Cynthia Corbett and husband, Jonathan, Havertown; Kathleen Monahan, Harrisburg; and Patrick Monahan and wife, Jacqueline, Spring Brook Twp.; five grandchildren, Patrick Monahan Jr. and wife, Emily; Maura Monahan and fiancé, Matthew Froelick; and Patrick, Matthew and Catherine Corbett; two brothers, Robert Maushart; and James Maushart and wife, Rita; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Donald Monahan; two brothers, Jack and Gerald Maushart; sister-in-law, Kathryn Maushart; and granddaughter, Meghan Monahan.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the St. Mary's Villa staff who provided her with excellent, kind-hearted care in her final years and whom she loved.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave. Interment, St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery, Honesdale.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave.
