Joseph Patrick McDonnell, 96, of North Scranton, died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife of 44 years is the former Joan Tomillo.
Born in Pittston, son of the late Joseph and Martha McDonnell, he was educated in Pittston schools. He proudly served in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He served overseas in European theater during World War II in the 101st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop C attached to the Fifth Armored Tank Division. He fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged with four battle stars in 1946. He was a master woodworker and worked for Monarch Casket Co. Prior to retirement, he was the grounds superintendent at the University of Scranton.
Joe was kind and generous to everyone and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Joe's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Regional Hospital of Scranton ER and ICU departments for all of their kindness and compassion.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph McDonnell, Pittston; grandsons, Karam and Jason McDonnell; two great-grandchildren; two siblings; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by several siblings.
Funeral services and interment with military honors in Fairview Memorial Park will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
