Marie E. O'Malley, 92, of North Scranton, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, at her home.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Smith Curran. Marie was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, where she was a member of the original Techettes cheerleading squad and the National Honor Society. She began her employment with the Scranton School District in the medical room at the former North Scranton Junior High School and later became a secretary to the principal until the school closed in 1987. She then moved to Northeast Intermediate School until she retired with 42 years of service in the district.
Marie also worked part-time at the Glider Diner for several years, and would become a regular patron and one of its best customers, with her reserved seat at the counter. She shared many opinions and listened to many stories and was loved by both employees and customers for years.
Marie was affectionally known as "Nan" by her grandchildren and their friends. In her younger days, Nan could be found sunbathing in her daughter's pool, as well as vacationing in Wildwood Crest, N.J. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City until the local casinos opened, and then became a regular, often lucky, patron. Until the pandemic started, Nan would spend Sunday afternoons having dinner at her daughter's house and she looked forward to FaceTime calls with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had an impeccable sense of style and will be lovingly remembered as generous, stubborn, sassy, unique and fiercely independent.
For the past 50 years her companions were her beloved dogs, Buffy, Buttons, Kerry, Molly and, most recently, Bella. Memories of Marie, (mom, grandmother, great-grandma, sister, aunt, friend) will be cherished forever. Marie was proud of her family and she will be always loved, never forgotten and deeply missed.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Maureen Petrucelli and husband, Michael (South Abington Twp.); son, Joseph and wife, Kathleen (Dunmore); sister, Yvonne Rafferty (Scranton); and Marie's loving grandchildren, Melissa Agosin and husband, Mikhael; Michael Vorozilchak and wife, Meredith; Mark Petrucelli and fiancée, Jessica; Amy Siegrist and husband, Michael; Stacey Gray and husband, James; Michael Petrucelli and wife, Girlita; Gina Oatridge and husband, Frank; Sara Stefanski and husband, David; Ryan O'Malley, Shane O'Malley; as well as 17 great-grandchildren, Gabby, Tommy, Lexi, Parker, Ashton, Madison, Penelope, Riley, Amelia, Connor, Jeremy, Mariah, Noah, Lila, Raelinn, Arya and Violet.
Additionally, she is survived by niece, Kathleen Taylor; and nephews, the Rev. James Rafferty, Michael and Paul Rafferty, and George Curran. Marie was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank A. and George J. Curran; brother-in-law, James A. Rafferty Sr.; and sister-in-law, Marion Curran.
