Robert "Bob" Joseph Fischer, 74, of Jefferson Twp., passed away Friday, April 5, 2024, at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Mary Sica.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Kenneth William and Sara (Johnson) Fischer. Bob was a graduate of South Catholic High School and earned his machinist degree from Johnson College of Technology. He was employed at RCA for over 29 years before becoming a corrections officer at Waymart State Correctional Institution, where he retired 13 years later.
Bob, also known as "Captain Bob," spent many hours boating on Lake Wallenpaupack. Nothing made him happier than having his sons, grandchildren and friends with him while he navigated the waters. When he wasn't at the lake you could often find him spending time with his grandchildren, bowling, hanging out with the guys at the Waldorf, or vacationing in Ocean City, Md. Bob was proud of his country and his service in the United States Coast Guard, where he earned a National Defense Service Medal as a seaman.
Bob had a playful personality, but demanded strong moral values. He had a "never quit" attitude that he courageously displayed during his five-year battle with cancer, which allowed him to spend more time with his grandchildren and meet Elsie, the youngest who was born last month.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Bob is survived by his sons, Robert William Fischer and his wife, Joy, of Moscow; and Jeffrey Patrick Fischer and his wife, Jamie, of Moscow; his grandchildren, Nathan Robert, Kaylee Rose, Kenneth William and Elsie Carmella Fischer; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William Kenneth and Kenneth William Fischer.
The funeral will be held Friday, April 12, at 9:30 a.m. from Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes & Cremation Services LLC, 3 First Street in Spring Brook Twp., with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Eulalia Church, 214 Blue Shutters Road in Roaring Brook Twp., by the Rev. David W. Cramer. Interment with Rite of Committal and military honors will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob's memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741; or American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692. To share your fondest memories of Bob, please visit the funeral home's website or Facebook page.
