Fort Gratiot

R. Lewis Brothwell, 95 of Fort Gratiot, passed away June 9, 2016 following a long illness. He was born to Claude and Agnes Brothwell on October 5, 1920 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1938.

On August 23, 1941 Lewis married Mary Lee Hughes. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. He worked over 35 years at the Detroit Edison Co. retiring in 1982 as a field foreman.  Lewis was a strong believer in hard work and family. He enjoyed wood working, hunting, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Lewis is survived by his daughter, Nancy L. (William C.) Moak of Fort Gratiot; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Bryan) Fenner of Marysville, David (Amie) Shepherd of Sandia Park, NM, Mary Beth Woolvett of Port Huron, and John C. Shepherd of Chandler, AZ; six great grandchildren, Sydney and Shelby Kavanaugh, Zachary and Nicholas Shepherd, and Payton and Piper Woolvett; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee, who passed away September 16, 2006. He was also predeceased by his son, Donald F. Brothwell, three sisters, Wilda (Nelson) Abernethy, Ruth (U. Grant) Burch, and Doris (Chuck) Dove.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Contributions may be made in Lewis's memory to Blue Water Area Humane Society or Leader Dogs for the Blind. To send condolences, please visit smithfamilyfuneralhome.com

Nancy, Kathy and I are so sorry your dad passing. I believe your dad and mother where good friends of my aunt and uncle, Merle and Gord MacJennett. You use to play with their 3 girls, Sharon, Diana & Debbie. We hope you and Bill are doing good. I am sorry we took so long to send the condolences. God bless you both and your family.
