Richard Gresham Stoneburner
Richard Gresham Stoneburner Obituary
Born on May 3, 1917, in Richmond, Va., Dick was the second of six children of Clara Smith Stoneburner and Dr. Lewis Tilghman Stoneburner Jr. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1938 and Medical College of Virginia in 1942. While attending school, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and also a member of the varsity basketball, football and track teams. During World War II, Dick served as a doctor on U.S. Navy destroyers in the North Atlantic. On June 6, 1942, Dick married Mary Elizabeth Poythress and raised four children. In 1953, they moved to Burlington where he was a surgeon for many years.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth; two brothers, Dr. Lewis T. Stoneburner III and Seabury D. Stoneburner. Survivors include his children, Richard G. Stoneburner Jr. (Donna) of Wellington, Fla., Jane S. Morris (Mike) of Seabrook Island, S.C., Harriet Anne Bell (Frazier) of Charlottesville, Va., and Betsy S. Weatherly (Rick) of Burlington. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, his sister, Elizabeth Ann Hawkins; two brothers, Frank D. Stoneburner and Dr. John M. Stoneburner; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington. The family will receive friends in the Heritage Center immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the International Children's Hospital, www.childrenshosp-richmond.org, or a charity of your choice.

Dr Stoneburner performed a life saving surgery on my mom in 1957 when I was an infant. She died 50 years later. Thanks to him I had many years with my mom. We always considered him a hero.

My sympathies to the family. Dr Stoneburner was my doctor years ago and he was just a great man. He will be missed by all.
