Herbert Smith Obituary

Herbert Dean Smith, 71, died peacefully on Jan. 12, 2009 at The Westerly Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Westerly, Mr. Smith was a graduate of Immaculate Conception School and of La Salle Academy, Providence. He also attended Mitchell College.
A U.S. Navy veteran, "Herb" worked as an electrical design draftsman and later as a design consultant in New Jersey and New York for over 40 years. His long and varied career provided him with the opportunity to work on nuclear power plants, aircraft instrumentation and several food and beverage lines. During his time in New Jersey, Herb made frequent trips to Vermont and served for a time as vice president of the Garden State Ski Club. He was also Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 250 of Garfield, N.J., for several years.
Retiring in 2001, Herb returned to Westerly to pursue his two hobbies, gardening and stone masonry. Herb was a member of the Westerly Yacht Club and a congregant of Saint Clare Church. He was also a Wilcox Park volunteer and occasionally taught tree grafting at the park's greenhouse.
Herbert was predeceased by his father and mother, Arthur W. Smith and Margaret Mary (Foley) Smith.
He leaves his wife of 28 years, Ann, and two sons Robert and Adam at home. In addition, he is survived by his former wife, Beverly (Miller) Penchenski of Freehold, N.J.; his son, Dean and daughter-in-law Corstina of Cream Ridge, N.J., son Todd and daughter-in-law Dawn of Freehold, N.J., and a daughter Jil of Seattle, Wash. He will also be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren, Devin, Aiden, Caleigh, Olivia, Jake, Sienna and Smith E. Rothchild; as well as his siblings, Arthur, Robert, Richard, Susan Latz and Una Jane Smith, all of Westerly, and Deanna Lancer of Forest Hills, N.Y. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews and 22 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Church. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Kidney Patients of Westerly, 1 Rhody Drive, Westerly, RI 02891.

To "Dee Dee",

How very sad this news about your brother Herb. My sincere condolences to you and your family. I remember all the Smiths growing up in Westerly, and you, especially, Dee Dee, from Miss King's dance, and your dear mom who made my wedding gown.

Peggy Kelly (nee Donohue)

My sympathies to all Herb's family.

I spent my summers with Aunt Deal and Nani and remember visits to Spring St. with my sister Elaine. Herb was older than I, most of all I remember Dee Dee, Dick, and Susan.

It appears that Herb accomplished many things in his life and will be missed by all. He came from good stock, as all Foley's did.

Thinking of you all,

Peggy (Dave Foley's granddaughter)
