Diana Casey Obituary

Diana Penna Casey passed on 5/7/13 after a valiant fight against breast cancer. Diana grew up in the once small Laguna Beach, CA. At an early age she developed a love of many art forms, studying jewelry & singing in the choir in high school. Diana attended Monterey Community College at the same time she began her jewelry career. Her art, as well as her amazing cooking, became expressions of Diana's love of family, friends & community. Through a traveling theater program she met her husband, Jack, in Laytonville, CA in 1966, and then moved to Eureka. Diana was a "doer", not a talker. Diana never wanted center stage in any context, but loved to participate in family & community functions, often taking the role of Chef, photographer, or any job that needed doing. The heart of her home was the kitchen, she loved to feed people. Her hugs were famous, as was the annual New Year's open house "Bagna Cauda" feast. She was fiercely independent, never wanted sympathy, but always was sympathetic and first in line to give of herself. Diana never knew how much she meant to people, but she was more than family, more than a wife, more than a sister, more than a mother to countless. She will be missed. She is survived by her husband, Jack Casey; her son, Rion Casey (wife, Janet) & their daughter, Alexandra; Diana's daughter, Kirin Casey Hickcox, (husband, David), & their children, Thailan, Hayden, Max, & Harper; Diana's brother Victor (wife, Joy) Penna; Diana's sister, Elizabeth Wetzel. She was preceded in death by her brother Joseph "Sonny" Penna (wife, Helen). Diana's memorial celebration of her life will be on Sunday May 26, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. at Liz Murguia's house. For more info, please contact Kirin Hickcox @ 678-850-1215. *Note: In lieu of flowers please send funds as donation to your local Hospice. If am wearing one of Diana's rings right now and will remember her wise words, calm affect, and loving great dry humor when there was nothing left except to laugh. Thank you, Diana....

Warmth that would wrap tightly around you in greeting. Calm experience that would jiggle and calm babies. Creativity and skill that made exquisite jewelry and spur-of-the-moment culinary masterpieces. A hearty welcome into the home that is a crossroads of music, artists, friends and family. We will miss Diana, but her essence of warmth, strength, and love will always be with us.

It is a loss to many in our community with Diana's passing. Diana made our wedding rings in the 80's and as another artist traded want to with me, I felt very honored that she wanted my work as I respect her art highly.. I hold her memory dear. She was an accomplished artist and true authentic person. She will be missed in her family, with her friends and in our close knit community. She was a blessing and a joy to be with.

I am so sorry to hear of Diana's passing. I knew her better in the '80's, but I always enjoyed her warm greetings. She designed a stunning ring for me to give to my boyfriend when I asked him to marry me. We will always remember her with great fondness.

We all know Diana as a loving person, giving, and forgiving with her strength always there. For years she and Jack were a part of Maxwell's Restaurant where she would soothe our daughter, Kate, on her knee, in her wise way and of course Kate would be comforted. We enjoyed being part of Bagna Cauda and reconnecting with friends on the first of the year, the house a fusion of food, friends and family with Diana and Jack radiating welcome to us all. She will be greatly missed but in knowing her she made us better.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Diana's passing. She welcomed me with open arms when I married into the family in 1975. Her home and her hug would always fill me with love and acceptance throughout the years. During those times she designed and redesigned rings for me which have remained some of my most cherished possessions.

Diana was one of the women I admired most in life. She will forever hold a place of honor in my heart.

I knew Diana through her jewelry. Last year she made two lovely rings for my daughters. She also designed the wedding ring I've worn for over 30 years. I spoke with her a few weeks ago about a commission and was saddened to learn that she had lost her battle. She was a gifted artist and a lovely person. Having recently lost my husband, I send you all my heartfelt sympathy.
