Robert Davis Obituary

DAVIS, Robert G., Bob (Robert G.) Davis of Richmond, Va., died on February 18, 2024 at the age of 82, following a long illness. A beloved husband, father and friend, he is survived by his wife, Debrah; daughter, Carrie Hammer (James); son, Rick Davis (Lisa); two grandchildren (Kyle and Alex); his brother Lance; best friend Ed Blanks; extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Earl Davis.

Bob was born June 9, 1941 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Delaware, West Chester State University, and received his PhD in Education from the University of Maryland in 1973. While at Maryland, he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, an honor society he would serve for the rest of his career. Upon completion of his PhD, Bob accepted a position at VCU where he remained for 40 years, retiring as professor emeritus in 2013.

In his early years at VCU, Bob was an enthusiastic coach of the cross-country team. He loved teaching health and physical education at VCU and was active on many committees and in other university activities. He remained active in Phi Kappa Phi, serving over the years as president of the VCU Chapter and later as executive director. He was an active member of the state's health education professional organization where he served first as president and later as executive director. In recognition of his significant contributions and service to VCU, Bob received one of only four service awards granted by VCU in 2012.

Bob's life mirrored his teaching. He was a model of healthy living and enjoyed many sports, including tennis, running and golf. He was especially well-known in the running community. Until his health declined, he could be spotted almost every day running somewhere up and down the streets of Richmond from downtown through Oregon Hill, VCU, the Fan, Museum District and Westhampton, often with his running buddy Ed Blanks. He was an original member and former vice president of the Richmond Roadrunners Club. Bob ran more than 530 races ranging from 200 meters to marathons. Following retirement, Bob and Debrah moved to Westminster Canterbury Richmond where he became known for his great smile, made many friends, and was able to pursue a lifetime love of golf.

At his request, there will be no service.

Those wishing to remember Bob may honor him with a donation to the Robert G. Davis Writing and Research Scholarship Award, VCU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, 701 W. Grace Street, Box 843010, Richmond, VA 23284-3010.

Dr. Davis was one of my all-time favorite professors! I´ll never forget being in 2 separate conga lines at a VAHPERD Convention where he stole my drink. Naturally, we took our entire line after him to get it back! Thanks for all the memories! VCU Class of 2004
