Royce Morris Obituary

Dr. Royce L. B. Morris died on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the Welmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Following the completion of his studies at Ole Miss, he began his teaching career at Emory & Henry College. He received his doctor of philosophy in papyrology from Duke University in 1975. Over the course of 32 years, Dr. Morris served as an instructor of classics, assistant professor of classics, associate professor of classics, professor of classics and chairman of the Department of Languages. In 1986, the students of Emory & Henry College bestowed upon Dr. Morris the honor of the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Morris will be remembered for establishing an annual study in Roman Art and archaeology in Rome, Italy. This class began in 1973 and is still an ongoing cultural and educational opportunity for students at Emory & Henry College. Many students have benefited from this unique opportunity. A graveside committal and interment service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2005 at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to attend the service. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service Saturday in the church fellowship hall or anytime at their home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations can be made to the Royce Morris Travel Award - Rome Trip c/o Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 950, Emory, Va. 24327. The Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon is serving the family of Dr. Royce L.B. Morris.

Sue Ann,

We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Morris's death.

As you will remember, while at Emory and Henry, I rented the cottage behind your house. I have fond memories of my time there and and the both of you being wonderful landlords and friends.

I am sure that I caused a few gray hairs for Royce as a result of our 'occasional' loud music.
