Thomas Shreve Obituary

SHREVE, Rev. Msgr. Thomas Francis, age 89, of Midlothian, VA, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, one day prior to his 63rd Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood. His education included BA in Theology and Philosophy, St. Charles College, Catonsville, MD; Master of Theological Studies, St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD; Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L), University of St. Thomas, Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1961, in Richmond, VA, and named Monsignor with the rank of Domestic Prelate on February 16, 1997. The Papal Honor of Protonotary Apostolic was conferred on him on June 27, 2008, as decreed by Pope Benedict XVI.

Loved by so many whom he served as priest, teacher, and pastor throughout the Catholic Diocese of Richmond for more than 50 years, he quickly came out of 'retirement' to continue to minister as a Catholic chaplain for the last 10 years at both Bon Secours hospitals, St. Francis Hospital (Midlothian) and St. Mary's Hospital (Richmond) until shortly before his death. In addition to the pastoral duties which he loved, he had also previously served as the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond for 27 years. Humility, positive spirit, and joy were hallmarks of his life and inspired so many.

Msgr. Shreve was born and raised in Falls Church and Arlington, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Eugene G. and Virginia (McCauley) Shreve; and his brother, Jack Shreve. He is survived by his loving family who include his sister, Mary Ellen (Shreve) Pearl, of Sandwich, MA; sister-in-law, Terry Shreve, of Silver Spring, MD; devoted nieces and nephews, Ginny (Shreve) Finley, of Bethany Beach, DE; Christine (Tom) Shreve Bowersox, of Ocean Ridge, FL; Michael (Sharon) Shreve, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Mark (Lisa) Shreve, of Chevy Chase, MD; John (Jenn) Pearl, of Enfield, CT; Christopher Pearl, of Simsbury, CT; and Jennifer (Dave) Pearl Kirk, of Sandwich, MA. Also surviving are his 11 great nieces and nephews; five great-great nieces and nephews; and Shreve, McCauley, Trott, Murphy, Groschan, Spitler cousins throughout the greater Washington, DC and Richmond areas.

Family will be receiving friends at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Midlothian, VA, on Tuesday, May 14 from 3 to 6 p.m., with Wake Service at 6 p.m.

I´d like to share how Msgr. Shreve has affected the lives of so many families at Epiphany. He was a pastor here and an assisting priest for many years. His homily demonstrated he was a priest-theologian, accessible and intellectual. I´m so grateful that the visitation and funeral will be held at Epiphany.

To acknowledge his influence on us, my family is one of the founding members of Epiphany. We have participated in its history, of which Msgr. Shreve was an immeasurable influence. A lasting tribute to him was the gift of the Neapolitan Creshe he started so many years ago. Unsurpassed by any other in the region. It will be a joyful reminder of his legacy every year.

As a member of the RSHM convent, who taught in St Bridget’s and Marymount HS for 15 years we were so fortunate to have Msgr. Shreve as our pastor during the 1970s. He was kind, generous, upbeat and a wonderful priest in the parish. He will be sorely missed in the diocese of Richmond. May he now reap his just rewards in heaven.

We were so sorry to learn of the passing of Monsignor Shreve. What a wonderful man of God. We were honored to be members of the Epiphany parish when he was there. May He Rest in God´s glory. So well deserved.
