NANTICOKE — Irene Laton, 59, of Nanticoke, passed away June 25, 2023, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. Irene was also known as Irene Barry. Irene was born April 30, 1964, in Wilkes Barre. Irene, who is the daughter of Greg Latsko Sr. and Sandra L. Martin, attended high school at West Side Tech in Pringle, Pa. Irene went on to obtain her LPN at Mesabi Range College of Minn., and received her bachelors in nursing at College Misericordia in Pennsylvania.
Irene was a nurse who most recently worked at Surgical Specialists of Wyoming Valley, prior to that she was a nurse at SCI Dallas.
Irene spent seven years living in Makinen, Minn., where she began her journey as a nurse. She was always known for putting others needs before her own, and helping others at any given time. Upon moving back to Pa. in 1998, she was named the "Minnesota Angel" as she witnessed an accident on the Sans Souci Highway and immediately stopped to help a 17-year-old boy. She left quietly and an article was placed in the newspaper looking for their "Minnesota Angel". Irene was a living donor as she graciously gave her mother her kidney. In doing so, she extended her mother's quality of life by another 20 years.
Irene was an avid Vikings fan. Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, going on cruises, playing cards/darts/softball/volleyball, going bowling, eating seafood, delivering newspapers, hosting holiday dinners, having cookouts, and making holiday cookies.
Irene is proceeded in death by her mother, Sandra L. Martin; stepfather, Joseph Fedorchak; aunt, Joan Rittenhouse; uncle, Luther Rittenhouse; and "gram," Irene Latsko.
Irene is survived by husband, Michael Laton, Sr.; daughter, Melissa Roberts and companion, Brynton Gleco; son, Theron Roberts, Jr. and wife Kristin; stepdaughter, Kayla Laton; stepson, Michael Laton Jr.; brothers: Andy Krasnavage and Greg Latsko Jr.; sister, Dawn Mazonis and husband, James; also seven grandchildren, four nieces, and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 7, at the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc,. 614 South Hanover St., Nanticoke. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Church remembrance service will be Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Nebo Baptist Church, 75 South Prospect St., Nanticoke.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Candy's Place in Forty Fort.
