Gregory Newell Obituary

Gregory I. Newell
age 62, a life resident of Sherrodsville, Ohio, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 3, 2013 in the Schoenbrunn Healthcare Center at New Philadelphia. He was born June 2, 1951 in Dennison, Ohio and was the son of Herman Irvin "Bud" and Luella M. Wood Newell of Sherrodsville. He was preceded in death by a brother Dennis R. "Denny" Newell. Greg was a retired educator. He was a graduate of Conotton Valley High School and held his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Akron. He was the principal of Southeast Local School in Portage County for 10 years, and was also principal of the former Lakeland High School in Freeport for one year. He taught high school at the Conotton Valley High School for 24 years, where he also served as a bus driver. And many knew Greg as an auctioneer for Newell Realty. He often lent his auctioneer skills to many local fund-raising events. He was a lifetime member of the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville where he held a number of offices within the church. Greg was always community minded. He served for 46 years as member and former chief of the Sherrodsville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. He was also one of the original founders and members of the Sherrodsville Emergency Squad, where he actively participated for many years as an EMT. He also held the office of Orange Township Trustee for over 20 years. Greg was dedicated to his family. He liked to spend his free time in their company, especially during their annual trips to Myrtle Beach together. He was fond of the outdoors. He engaged in hunting and fishing occasionally, but particularly enjoyed the many hours he spent working outdoors with his dad, Bud Newell. Greg liked to share stories about his life, and often shared his memories from touring the United States and Europe with the Ohio Youth Choir.
In addition to his parents "Bud" and Luella Newell, he is survived by his wife, Doris A. Richards Newell, whom he married Nov. 1, 1986, his four children Bryan Newell and his wife Kristen Braden of Powell, O., Carrie and David Harris of Stow, O., Chase Newell and his fiancee Ashley Holder of North Canton, O., and Ciera Newell of Sherrodsville, granddaughters Lydia and Juliet Harris, both of Stow, his brother Kevin and Angel Newell of Laguna Niguel, California and a sister-in-law Sadie Newell of Sherrodsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 in the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville with Pastor Kenneth Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be held Thursday, Sept. 5 (TODAY) from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Baxter- Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville. I can't call him "Greg" because he was always Mr. Newell. Not seeing him since i was in high school, my brain went right to Civics and Economics class and how he looked then...that mustache! I am so sorry to hear of his passing however seeing this did give me pause today to stop and remember a much simpler and carefree time. Nice man, great educator.

Bud, Luella and family: I am so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. My heart goes out to you and your family. Greg was always a positive influence and always had a smile to share. Rindy and I just attended the 50th anniversary of the Ohio Youth Choir at the State Fair last month - a wonderful experience for us all. It brought back so many memories of all those CV voices who've performed there. My sincere sympathy to you and your family.
