Antonio Tirino Obituary

Tirino, Antonio "Tony" ALBANY Antonio "Tony" Tirino, 66, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at home surrounded by his loving family. Tony was born January 22, 1940 in Airola, Italy. He immigrated to the United States in 1956. Tony was the founder of the Albany Recreation Parks Soccer Program and co-founder of the Capital District Youth Soccer League. Tony's undying devotion to soccer was outstanding. He took inner city kids and taught them all the skills of soccer. Soccer to Tony was like breathing air. His ability to give to his community was astonishing. On February 23, 1997, he celebrated his 25 years of giving to the soccer community. On that day, Mayor Jerry Jennings officially declared "Tony Tirino Day." One of Tony's proudest moments was when Mayor Jennings dedicated a park in Tony's name, "The Tony Tirino Soccer Fields." Tony's favorite motto was, "for the kids." One of Tony's other passions was singing and performing in front of people. He was part of many Italian bands and played at many weddings and festivals. You could always catch him singing to his grandchildren. Tony was famous for singing the Ave Maria. Tony worked for many years for the Albany City School District, where he met many children. After retirement, Tony took a part-time job working for the Recreation and Parks Department, where he could still be involved teaching kids. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Josephine (Natale) Tirino. His children, Pasquale and Anna Tirino and their children, Antonio "Tony" and Pasquale; Nick and Maryanne Tirino and their children, Sabrina, Nicky, Vincent and Anthony; Elvira and John Crisorio and their children, Gabriela, Maria Santa and John III. He is also survived by his siblings, John Tirino and Maria and Luigi DeNitto. His brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Lucia Natale, Ludovico and Maria Iannucci, Dino and Rose Barbato, Lee and Barbara Natale and John and Sally Simeone. He was preceded by his parents, Pasquale and Elvira Tirino; his in-laws, Nicola and Jenny Natale, Carmen Natale and Rosa Tirino. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends also survive him. Tony was a member of the Sons of Italy, the Italian American Community Center and the West Albany Italian Benevolent Society. Funeral services Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to St. Margaret Mary's Church, Albany at 9:00 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment, Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Tony in a special way may send a contribution to the Albany Soccer Club or the American Cancer Society.

Hey Tony,

I know you already know this, since you helped us out, but we made it all the way to semis this year in sectionals, and it was your team that did it. Almost every player on that team had the privilege of being coached by you Tony, and that's what made it possible for us to play together so well. We all miss you Tony, and every game we played and will continue to play forever was and will be in your name, for your honor.

Zio Tony,
We still think about you all the time. Our son has a soccer ball that was yours. He plays with it often and calls it "Tony's soccer ball." We love and miss you. Things aren't the same without you. Christmas won't be the same without you coming to my mother's house dressed so sharply like you always were. We can't hear the Ave Maria without crying. How blessed we were to have you sing it at our wedding. You were an amazing person and you left behind an amazing family. We still think of you guys all the time. All our love.

We need your help. Your family still needs you. You will never be forgotten.

Patsy, and Nick I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I only met him a few times on nights we came to pick you up before going out and while waiting in your basement for Patsy to make final adjustments to his hair your dad had us laughing and made us feel like part of the family. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

To the Tirino family: I am very sorry for your loss. Tony, "The Coach" was a great family man and a great conversationalist. He always had opinions, about the New York Yankees, the Saratoga races, and I used to love to hear him talk. I always saw him in a great mood in the back yard of Dino and Rose on Beacon Avenue, and he always seemed happiest when he talked about his family. Coach, we will all miss you. You will live on in memory as a true gentleman, a fine sportsman, and somebody who cared about others. Rest in peace, Tony.

All my best wishes go out to the Tirino family. Some of my oldest memories involve learning from Tony at both indoor and outdoor soccer clinics, and being convinced by Tony to start playing with the traveling teams. I always knew it was going to be a good day when I got to say hi to Tony as I walked through the halls at Albany High School. Although it has been several years since I've seen Tony, he made a lasting impression on me, and I will always treasure that. Tony was an incredible person, and will truly be missed.

Patsy, Nicky and family,

My deepest condolences for your loss. Your father was one of the kindest men I've ever met. He made everyone who's lives he touched feel special. I've known Tony for alot of years and we didn't get to cross paths much in the last 10 years or so but a couple of years ago I was at the Jersey shore with my family and of the thousands of people there, I run into Tony and your mom. We talked as though we never missed a beat in all those years! He is going to be sorely missed by me and the countless number of people he left a positive impact on. God Bless you Tony.

To the Tirino family,

I worked with Tony at Albany High School for many years. He was dedicated, loyal, and trustworthy. It was always a pleasure to see his smile and glowing face whenever he returned to the high school after his retirement. I would go out of my way to see him in the halls because I had a lot of respect for him. He was a happy and peaceful man. He loved his family. He supported his community and its children. He enjoyed bringing pleasure and good feelings to people through his music. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, acquaintances and co-workers. All of us will be at a loss without him. He was "old school" good and "old school" tough. God Bless Tony and his family.

The Tirino family.
There are no words that can describe the sorrow that we all feel. Tony was a wonderful man and an outstanding role model for so many us. Not only have we learned so much about the game of soccer but also have learned many of life’s lessons. I like many other players and coaches were blessed by having him part of our lives and have very fond memories of him on and off the soccer field. On behalf of all the players and coaches, may you find comfort in knowing his heart, compassion and love of the game has touched us all. God Bless.

December 29, 2006

I feel very blessed to have known Tony for the past 15 years. If a person's life is measured in terms of how many people he has touched and influenced, then Tony is at the top. He gave of himself to the soccer community and to the children who are the most important part of this community. His commitment was a life long one and his accompllishments are many. Tony made the game fun for the kids. He taught my daughter Heather who is now 21 years old a "step over" move when she was 7, that resulted in a goal and more importantly Tony's smile and appreciation. He shared his skill and his passion for the game to all who wanted to learn.
When we complete the first phase of field improvements to the Tony Tirino Fields at Hoffman Park this Spring, I know that Tony will be looking down from heaven with a great smile.
I am sorry for your loss and wish all of Tony's family and friends comfort and support.

Tony Tirino, more than anyone else, was responsible for the tremendous growth of interest in soccer in the City of Albany, both for the Albany Youth Soccer recreational program which he founded and led for so many years, and for the Albany Soccer Club travel program, which he co-founded and for which he served as a longtime coach and leader. My oldest son Ben is representative of so many children in Albany: he was taught soccer skills by Tony at skills clinics when he was a five year old at the rec program; he went for several seasons to the Tony Tirino soccer camp at the Washington Ave armory; and last winter through spring he was on a Under 16 team of the Albany Soccer Club coached by Tony. Tony has left an indelible positive impact on everyone he has touched. We will miss him greatly. On behalf of the Board of the Friends of Albany Youth Soccer, Inc., I extend our deepest sympathy to Tony's family.

To Pina, Patsy, Nick, Elvira,
John and Sandrina,

There are no adaquate words to describe the deep felt sorrow we feel today. Gene and I together with my parents, our daughters and families extend to all of you our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. There was not one significant occassion in our family that was not highlighted by Tony's glorious voice. He will always be part of our happiest memories and an extention to our small immidiate family.
I hope that Gods grace gets you all through these darkest moments. This toghether with the knowledge that his presence although too brief, made a difference and brought joy to the many people whose life he touched through his love of music, sport, family, friendships and all things Italian.

May God grant him the eternal peace he deserves and give you all the strenght to get through the difficult days ahead.

With love and friendship,
Rosanna and Gene Aiuppa

Patsy and family, We are all so deeply sorry for the loss of your father. We all just adored him. Tony always went out of his way to talk to us every year at the Italian Club and we loved hearing him sing with his band. He was a great friend to our family and we will miss seeing him.
We will keep you all in our prayers.

Elvita and family,
Though I didn't know your Dad personally but the way you spoke of him certainly showed the love he had for his family and friends, a very caring, gentle man. Please know my thoughts are with you and your family.

Tony is one of the most extraordinary people I ever have met. His presence immeasurably enriched the lives of those of us in the Albany community -- and I feel so fortunate to be able to count myself not only among his friends but also, along with my children, among his soccer students.
