August Pallone Obituary

Pallone, August R. Jr. WATERVLIET August R. Pallone, Jr., "Gus", born November 15, 1946, beloved husband of Catherine (Della Rocca) Pallone, fought the final battle of his life on May 13, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospital, with his family at his side. He is the son of the late August and Genevieve Pallone. He worked for various Albany trucking firms, the Watervliet Arsenal, and various departments with New York State, retiring from the NYS Office of Mental Health as a Reimbursement Agent in February 2012. Gus is the father of Craig (Sophia) and Scott Pallone and the proud grandfather of Thomas and Matthew Pallone, who brought much love and happiness into their poppa's life, and on whom he doted. Gus is survived by his dear sister, Stephanie Charney (Bernard); his nephews, Keith and Brett Charney (Cynthia) and grandnephew Blake Charney. He is also survived by his aunt, Veronica Madlin; uncle, Thomas Krajewski; cousins, and his very special aunt and caregiver, Theresa Pallone; as well as his life-long friend, Thomas Rourke. Gus spent 20+ years as an assistant football coach with South Colonie's Pop Warner Raiders and Knights teams and Bishop Maginn HS Junior Varsity, as well as head coach for Watervliet's Pop Warner Midget Division and Catholic Central HS Varsity. He willingly ended his summers in July to teach boys and a few girls the art of the game. Coach Gus was a mentor to many of his young charges. Leading his helmeted warriors through gridiron battles brought him great joy. Gus enlisted in the US Navy. He took pride in completing "Hell Week" and not ringing the bell at Coronado. His UDT training well served him in Vietnam. Gus completed his tour of duty and safely returned home, but never forgot his brothers in arms. He completed his service at Helicopter Squadron 4 in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Drs. Weissmann and Spektor of NYOH, as well as their caring nurses and staff, and Drs. Ben, Choma and Samuels of Albany GI Consultants. They would especially like to extend their sincere thanks to the Watervliet Fire Department/EMS, St. Peter's Hospital's physicians nursing staff and techs for the excellent care and compassion extended to both Gus and his family, while fighting tirelessly to extend his life. Funeral services Friday, May 18, 2012 at 8:15 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to Blessed Sacrament Church, Albany at 9:00 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Thursday, May 17, 2012 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. I have good memories of Gus Pallone, a member of the NYS Tax Compliance Division Call Center years ago. Quite a comedian he was; I laughed more talking to him than I did talking to taxpayers! This is a tribute to Gus' character. May the memory of him remain forever in your hearts.

To Gus' family - I am very sorry for your loss. I went to Our Lady of Angels grammar school with Gus and haven't seen him again since we were both 14. But I remember him so well - he was full of life. I remember he could be mischievous but was always a sweet boy. And reading his obituary, he certainly lived a life that seemed marked by love, generosity and integrity. May he rest in peace!

My condolences to the Pallone family. Gus and I were classmates and friends at Our Lady of Angels elementary school (1951-1960) and we were neighbors in the Arbor Hill area. He was known to us the as "Skeets" and it was non-stop fun to be with him. We didn't keep in touch after high school, but we had a great telephone visit several years ago when we were planning a school reunion. I feel like another part of our childhood has passed away with Gus, and it is sad. May God bless and comfort your family in its loss.

I don't have to tell you what a special person Gus was, and here at work he was an "office favorite!"

A little story: Every Thursday Gus would bring pastries from the Schuyler bakery for us all in the office. This consisted of multiple bags, and everything from eclars to glazed doughnuts to cupcakes. Gus did this for years, and one time when Gus was scheduled off on a Thursday, he came in just to bring us the goodies!

Gus was as fine a man as I have ever met. I consider it an honor to have worked with him, and a privledge to have been his friend.
